I don't much like facebook

I had to take a stand with my Mom who's now learning her way around FB, as she kept feeling the need to share videos of babies doing cute things on my page. Since i threatened to block her, she now only posts pictures of animals ... and that's fine

First, not too familiar with how it all works.

Second, and this is the biggie, I accept friend requests or try and friend some of my old friends from back in the day (okay, way back in the day) and I don't recognize these quasi senior citizens! I mean they have the same name but they cannot possibly be my friends who were skinny and with hair last I saw them.

facebook just makes me sad.

If I wanted to keep up with people I haven't seen in 30+ years, I would have stayed in touch 30+ years ago. And unless your dinner is from a Michelin 5 star restaurant, I don't care what it looks like.

I saw the title of this thread and assumed it was going to be one some lame post-pubescent rant about finding heavy metal band members through social media but instead it made me laugh.

Studies about Facebook tend to confirm what you feel, that Facebook tends to depress a lot of people.

Don't think of Facebook as a way to keep up with people. Think of it as a way to get daily updates on things that interest you. I follow a lot of effect pedal companies and enjoy reading updates on new products. They also run special sales and promotions from their FB pages. I also follow a lot of bands and dig reading their tour updates and what they are up to in the studio.

I don't care for it much, but it's almost a social necessity now like having a credit card.

I'm on there but not under my real name and all my profile info is misleading to protect me from my past acquaintances finding me.
I just prefer to leave the past behind me.

As for the political spam I just block the friends of my friends. Takes a while, but 90% of the memes I don't want to see gets filtered out because most of it originates from a handful of political oriented accounts.

Thanks for the tip, Next time I venture on to FB, I'll change my preferences settings.

You can decide if you get email notifications and you decide how much info you want to put there (and if it's accurate). You can also block posts in your feed from people that are annoying - I don't see posts from my wife's cousin every time she has a bag of chips.

Sure, your real friends, but there are other layers of acquaintances, former co-workers, schoolmates, etc. with whom you might want to keep in slight contact. That's the purpose of Facebook (along with "liking" all your favorite bands to keep track of their doings).

I didn't see the hate that you are suggesting, the hate we see far to often of people with great success. The "gripes" so far up to your post are valid points. Not one of them so far complained about the people getting rich off FB; rather, they have just implied that it is invasive and/or devoid of intelligence and/or a waste of life and/or an outlet for people who might be better off working on managing their lives much better. Seems like you're hating logic.

One of the reasons I deleted my fb for good last February after nine years. Haven't looked back.

On a side note... It is really difficult to actually and completely delete your account with all its content. Requires A LOT of manual work.

Talkbass is about as far as I go with "social media", and that's only because y'all are doing something I'm interested in.

Anyone who truly knows me, knows how to find me. Anyone who doesn't know how to find me, isn't someone I want to be in touch with. That's by design.
