I don't really get/like metal...

Thing is, there's good and "bad" death metal vocals, I absolutely love John Tardy from Obituary, Glenn Benton (even if he cheats) of Deicide, Dave Vincent of Morbid Angel... they all seem distinct to me. I can't stand the guy from Cattle Decapitation and there's an awful lot of very generic Death Metal vocalists that you could swap out for some other dude and it'd sound the same.
Have you heard the new-fangled grind style pig grunts? Totally ridiculous and probably partly responsible for growlers havings such a bad rep.

I'm no metal expert by any stretch of the imagination. I'm heavily into jazz and fusion stuff mostly, but I do venture outside of my comfort zone and I do like listening to some metal (don't think I'll ever play it though). As was mentioned before, there are so many sub genres, I can't keep track of one tenth of what they all are, and I can't even identify exactly which like. I'll hear something that I like and that's about it. This is a cool website that has helped me:

Map of Metal

Some here may already know of it, but it maps out all(?) types of metal with descriptions and has links to youtube examples. Just like jazz, there are many sub genres and I don't even like some types of jazz (Dixieland and free jazz immediately come to mind). I would venture that there is something, somewhere in the vast sea of metal that many would find appealing.

These guys look really butch.
Don't let them over to your rehearsal space or they'll bedazzle your jacket.
I refused to wear eye black playing baseball bc I considered it makeup.

you're reading too much into it...I was merely commenting on how much i liked watching that drummer playing a genre i don't get...

You know, not everything that seems like a troll post is a troll post. Did you even read what I wrote in the OP?

then the thread title is click bait. it could have been "check out this metal drummer" if that's what you wanted to bring to the board.

btw, everyone has things they like and things they don't like. i love metal - a wide variety of types - and i'm sure you love types of music i don't like.

Since this is a bass forum after all:

And (most) metal does not condone violence, in the same way that Stephen King doesn't. They just thematise the darker emotions like fear, anger and hate that every human carries inside them. What does a serial killer think or someone sitting on the electric chair ? Certainly more interesting and thoughtful than Miley Cyrus or whatever the shag bubblegum ******** is stuffed down your throat everyday.

Concerning vocals, I do listen to melodic death metal quite often, but I draw the line where I can't understand what the singer is doing. So Amon Amarth, Arch Enemy or Feared is totally fine for me, since they actually have great technique and diction. (Try it, its really, really hard to sing in that style and still form words in a way that is understandable.
Stuff like Cannibal Corpse or Entombed ain't really my thing, great music and very talented musicians, I just can't understand a word.

my husband is literally the gentlest, kindest person i know, but he LOVES death metal, and he's been listening since the '80s including to cannibal corpse, although we both liked the original vocalist more.

or death metal if thats what this is called...but im getting a kick out of watching this drummer play

I've seen these guys at a local gig, before their first signed CD. Great stuff. Anyway if you don't get it, then don't listen to it. There's plenty of other things to do. Some of us would appreciate if you restrain any sarcastic comments when someone who plays metal asks for help (don't worry there are enough people here who will do that for you). Remember that this is a niche style, and if you don't "get it", you are with the majority.

I didn't take the op in a negative way at all. There are many talented musicians I appreciate in genres I don't get into. I've been listening to heavy music for 40yrs, but have zero interest in playing it. I prefer easy, mellow jazz, blues, experimental.

Check this out

Agreed. I thought the OP was being pretty cool by checking out a genre that they don’t particularly enjoy and finding something to appreciate.

Honestly you are just reading far too much into that as well. I was merely offering up an opinion on a genre of music (this is a discussion forum for discussing such things after all), and than pointing out how cool/interesting the drummer is to watch.

Sure, I could have said, "check out this cool drummer", but I also wanted to point out it was in a genre of music that just doesn't speak to me, and the reason for that is my positive comment would have been less impactful without the context of my thoughts on that particular genre. That is in no way a negative comment towards that genre, its not a slam, its just a fact (no different that me walking outside on a clear day and saying "The sky is blue". Nowhere did I say anything negative about it, as a matter of fact I had thought i took extra effort to NOT say anything negative.
