So theres a shop in Poland I think it is that had a burst JB for sale awhile back..I guess the guy buys used basses and refinishes them and he does an amazing burst. I thought a lot about this bass when it was for sale...A couple of times it ended up in my cart at Reverb but I never went through with it.

If I had the money to burn I'd be tempted to buy a bass and ship it over to him to refinish.

There's alot of different opinions on this. It is cheaper than a refin.

I feel your pain. As much as I do like a burst finish, I don't like wide, bright red bands. I prefer that band to be narrower and leaning toward a burgundy color. with amber in the middle.

It looks like a standard burst to me, not much different than the 64 jazz AV I have. Whats crappy about it and can you provide an example of a non-crappy burst?

Edit: ok...thats kind of orangish looking

While I don't think it is "crappy looking," I do think the transitions between yellow/amber, red, and black are too sharp. To me, the bursts that look best are those where the color changes are a bit more gradual.

My favorite feeling, sounding, playing bass is the one thing that makes my stomach turn.....sunburst. I've had it for 12 years. Gigged it everywhere. I keep one bass in my living room to just noodle around on when watching TV or if I have 5 minutes waiting for my wife or whatever it maybe. It's the only one I own that makes me cringe when I walk by. I'm probably not gonna do anything about it. I'm afraid to change bodies or even have it refinned because I love the sound that much. I have a Fender USA 5 string P bass in the same boat. Plays great. Sounds great. Loved the burst/tort when I first got it. Now I'm over it.

I've been wanting to get a bass (like the fish) boat metal flake bass for years. What I need to do is pop all the hardware off of this one and send it to Wilkinson or somebody like that and get a refin.

Most reputable finish guys are somewhere around $300 every time I have searched.

For anyone who cares about the topic. I've narrowed down three routes. One is nothing. Two, I've contacted cincity specifically nfor that orange color someone posted in here. Three..warmoth Daphne blue maybe an off white

If it makes you feel any better, I think the blocked neck looks worse than the body.

It's a poly finish. Getting a refin with poly finish will change the tone exactly zero.

I couldn't do it. If I loved a bass that much but couldn't stand the aesthetics I would have to get it redone.

This. Send it to Pat Wilkins and call it a day.

Get it refinished in nitro and it might sound better. I've heard that from a lot of TBers. And over time, it would get that vintage "worn" look that's all the rage these days. Just food for thought.
