I HATE UPS!!!

I tried chasing down a claim with them, but I kept getting told different things and pushed around by anyone I was told to contact. It got to the point where they said I had to have the seller/shipper file the claim at the location he shipped from. Load of BS.

This is the case, the claim must be filed by the party who is paying for the freight, the party who is paying UPS. So, even if you paid MF for shipping, MF is still the responsible party and they must file the claim. This is the case with all types of shipping companies, not just parcel. A lot of bitching goes on about these companies, but it is amazing that there are not MORE damage issues than there really are.

Bought a Bass off of Reverb on 7/3. Seller is in LA, as in Louisiana. I am in VA. After 2 weeks of no UPS tracking updates and a lost package investigation I am told that the instrument showed up in CA. ***? So now it's on its way across the continent again, in the dead of summer. Tracking indicates I should have it on 7/27, yet after 2 days of shipping out again it's still in CA. Keeping my fingers crossed and hoping it was well packed.

First - Welcome to TalkBass!

I've had both good and bad experiences with packages in transit by both FedEx & UPS. But by far the WORST was USPS. On top of that, when I lodged a complaint, they were snotty about it. Oh well, whatcha' gonna' do?!

The one plug I will give - my local UPS driver is a fellow musician, and he knows just how to handle those boxes coming to my address. Seriously, awesome dude, good attitude and a hustler. Also he knows about what time I get home if it's something I gotta' sign for.

And the lady that runs the local FedEx counter where I sometimes ship stuff... CLASS ACT. Very helpful.

Just sayin'... there's good and bad ones in every batch. Glad they made it right, or at least better.

I've had nothing but good experiences with UPS. They've shipped me all six of my instruments I've bought over the last 5 or 6 years, plus many hundreds (possibly thousands?) of other various items, and they've all arrived in top condition without a scratch. Also, in all that time, I've only ever had one small item that went missing. I even got to know the driver whose route I'm on, and he treats me real good.
You are very lucky then! Years ago I bought a Guild Bluesbird off of Ebay, autographed by Garbage(which i didnt really care about)some kid won in a contest. Shipped in OHSC in a well packed box. Had a crack at the headstock/nut when I got it. The kids dad claimed it was perfect(sans the signatures)when it shipped. That one was hard to tell if it was a shipping issue or not. The dude ended up paying me for 1/2 of the repair and I had the siggies buffed out.

all shippers have the sucky moments ... as we all should know ... sht happens ...! but they and MF fixed it straight away ... that is what customer service is all about ... taking care of screw ups ...

hate ... seems like an over reaction ... 'unhappy' would be more appropriate ...

but , then again , i come from an era when we went to our local stores and walked out with our gear .. !

I only had something damaged once by UPS, and it was around the holiday season when the most packages are delivered and when temporary workers are hired. I ship basses/guitars using them often and other than that one time have not had a problem. I prefer them the FedEx.

If the kid who makes my Blizzard drops it on the floor as he serves it to me, and then is cool about it, apologizes, and quickly makes me another one, I don't see the point in complaining.

UPS, and every delivery service known to man since the beginning of time, is going to screw the pooch. It's a statistical reality. When your number comes up, and they crunch your package, the best they can do is fix it and make you another one. Sounds like UPS did that in this case.

As a result, I will continue to utilize their services.

I refuse to ship anything I sell through UPS!! Unlike UPS, the postal service at least doesn't send larger packages through a conveyor belt that shoot packages through at 20 mph(where a majority of damage occurs), they *have* to hand carry the larger shipment's...

Sure, it takes longer, but it's usually cheaper and I would hope they take a little more pride in their work, I've also never had an issue with USPS, with UPS or FedEx I've been surprised that my shipments survived unscathed from how bad the boxes looked...

Well, at least they took care of you though

So, why the hate? They fixed the problem. You even said the guy at UPS was cool.

Never had a problem with them. I've only used them 15 or 20 times, though.

That's why you should always ship in a hard case.

why complain or drag a companies name through the mud when they fixed the problem right away. Mistakes happen. Especially when you order a bass that does not come with a hard shell case. You really don't know if musicians friend did that before shipping it.

It happens to all of us, they made it right, when you are out a grand, then you can complain. Think of this as a learning experience. Shop locally if you aren't a internet shopper.

I'm with the OP on the matter of UPS being really careless with their handling. I've had a $1700 bass shipped by them and THANK GOD it was in a hard case because the box must have gotten smashed in transit by them, as the outside of the case was cracked and broken a whole bunch. I tried to file a claim and they denied it. so i go with Fed ex for expensive or fragile items now.
