I have a problem

whenever i get some money together i start dreaming of a new bass rather than upgrading my rig. Is it wrong of me to play a 2000$+ warwick through a GK 400rb 2x10 combo and a hartke 2x15 cab (my current rig)? I just can't get as excited over a box with some knobs on it (as some people in here do) as I can about a sexy new instrument. I guess that pretty immature. but should i upgrade my rig before i think about getting another bass? thanks

i don't think this is a question of costs... i built up my rig that i love after having found the bass that i love (well LOVED at the time as it were) and then i started swapping basses again. i'm not playing a crazy high end rig (it's a GBE600 w/ 2 avatar cabs), but i'd have no issue playing a $4K custom into it. so in short, if you're happy with your rig, then keep going with it! when i saw anthony jackson playing at blues alley he was plugged into a beat up 800rb and an even more beat up hartke 4x10.

if you're not happy or even satisfied with your rig, then replace it. you will definitely love your existing basses more with an amp that makes you happier.

ive got a crappy 40w combo amp, sorting my rig out at the mo.

There's no right or wrong here. If you like the way the setup sounds and it works for what you do, then it's fine. If you don't like some aspect of it, then it's time for a change.

I have 4 bass rigs available, from a Demeter / Acme stack to a Bassman 150. I still have the infamous "freebie" Hartke stack. I dig 'em all and won't hesitate to use any bass with any combination.

I always considered amplification a bit more important then the bass it's self. You need low end power to cut through any sort of mix, and if your rig is crap, you likely won't be able to do that weather you have a nice bass or a starter pack bass.

Basically if you think it sounds good, fine. If not, upgrade the rig. As mentioned before, a nice bass through a cheap amp will sound like a cheap bass.

Whatever sounds good to you and inspires you most. I don't know what size venues you might play, but keep in mind if you end up playing anything that's, for example, 500 seats or more OR if you're playing outdoors, you will likely need to run direct through the sound system in order to get decent sound and coverage. At that point, even if you have the greatest sounding rig in the world, you're at the mercy of the sound system and your rig is not going to be much more than a monitor for the stage and first couple rows.
