I Miss The 2x15!

:hyper:I HAD TWO SHOWS THIS WEEKEND, WITH AN SWR BIG BERTHA I PICKED UP ON CRAIG'S FOR UBER-CHEAP. SPEAKERS AREN'T BLOWN, AND I GOTTA TELL YA, I'M BACK ON THE 2X15 CAB. MY WHOLE BAND WAS FLIPPIN' ON HOW GOOD THE BASS SOUNDED, AND IT WASN'T THE KIND OF TONE THAT SAWED YOUR EAR OFF. I'M RUNNING AN AMP SVP-PRO INTO A CROWN 1K POWER AMP. IT HAS WAY MORE POWER THAN I COULD NEED. I'D STILL LIKE TO GO 2X15, WITH A 2X10 ON TOP, THINKIN' THAT'D BE THE CAT'S MEOW. ANYONE HAVE A BIG BERTHA, WITH A GOLIATH JR. SET-UP?

jnewmark.........I'm with you these sounded great with the JBL's also.On low volume gigs I will still use the Kustom head.It is neat to hear and see reactions from old school guy's at gigs and the younger guy's too.

I couldn't part with my 2x15 until moving it squished a disc in my back.

Being stubborn I went from 2x12 + 2x15 to a 2x10 + two 1x15's.

Wanted lighter but didn't want neos either. So they're about 65# each and both just barely fit in my back seat.

I like the AFTER. I think after I mess up my back carrying my big bertha around this summer. I'll probably switch to something like that. I live on the second floor. and have to man that thing up and down the stairs every weekend.

Just saw one for sale in local Craigslist.

ADD READS: "80's Sunn 215, $250.00, cab plays great, just a few small tears from loading into my car"

Pic shows a, I believe grey colored front cloth grill, w/SUNN in upper corner. Cab is tolex and has metal corner protectors and no large tears from what I can see.

Were there several 1980's, Sunn 215 model cabs with different specs? I'm guessing its a 4 ohm, about 300 watts maybe. Anyone know better? Have not heard back from seller yet with answers. Just got a GB Streamliner 900 and might like to try it with a old-er school cab.

Hmmm, Someone I remotely know sells a Peavey 80's dual black widow cab for 250 dollars. Both 15" speakers still working. 400 watt at 8 ohm... Sounds like one made before the speakers turned to 350 watt ratings each.

good cab/deal? :p

If that CL ad was in my area that cab would be MINE by now!

Some of the early '80s Sunn cabs had that gray grill cloth sorta like what Traynor used. Late in the '80s they switched to solid black grill cloth.
Early '70s Sunns had a grill cloth almost identical to '60s blackface Fenders.

Personally I believe those 215 Sunns were some of the best sounding cabs ever built. They seemed to have a nice smooth frequency response. Even the lowest notes sounded clear and distinct.
If you look at vintage photos of Creedence Clearwater Revival you'll notice they all used Kustom heads. But while John and Tom also used Kustom cabs Stu used three Sunn 215 cabs.

But be careful. Those cabs were not built to handle a lot of wattage like todays cabs. But if you power them reasonably they will sound great.

Another great Sunn cab from that era was the identical sized 312 cab. Three hornloaded 12s in a vertical array. Back in the 'early 90s, I used one with a 1966 Bassman head for small gigs. Also sounded great with a Fender Rhodes Stage 73.

I've been doing some shows at a local drag strip rockin' the old PV 2x15 w EV15Ls pushed by a GK MB500, the punch and clarity is perfect w/o PA support and the sound carries very well. We are set up just past the finish line (1/8 mile) and they can hear me at the start line over most of the cars and cycles!
