I Miss The 2x15!

i played at an open mic blues jam on sundays 1985-1986(for free lol) and there was this old beat up ampeg 2x15, probably the same size as an 8x10. i wish i knew the model number, cuz i have never heard an svt 8x10 that sounded as good, and trust me, i have played through at least a hundred of them over the years. johnny a.

My first pro cab was the EV B215-M. 2 EVM 15's with a 6" mid driver that was a lot more musical than the piezo tweets at the time. That was back in the 80's. I just sold that cab a few weeks ago to finance another amp. Hated to do it, but just no call for a cab that heavy anymore. That cab has been to ATL, Louisiana, New Mexico, Wisconson, Illinois... lots of history with that bad boy. Hadn't used it in years though.

That being said, I recognize that there are a lot of other great cab configurations out there, and I am not stuck on just one. But the 2x15 or two 1x15's is definitely a setup that I like.

In the 80's I played in a touring band. I played an Ampeg V4 with 2 1x15 home made cabs. The speakers were 15" 400 watt EV Black Shadows. The best bass sound I ever had! Every where I went I would get compliments on my sound people were amazed the cabs were home made. All I used was a Boss 7 band EQ pedal with it. I sold those cabs years ago because they were huge. I was 18years old when I built them with no real plans. My friend had an 2x15 Acoustic so I just cut the dimensions in half and built 'em.

The middle pic is my IP153 with the EX115 extension cab. Jim did not make many of these. There is one 500/1,000-watt amp driving the woofer(s) and a separate 500-watt amp driving the mids/tweet. This is one of the best-sounding rigs I own, if not the best. IME, of course.

The bottom pic is my NV215.

I just picked up one of the Mesa Diesel 215s yesterday ($350). So far one of the sweetest sounding cabs I've owned... Now I just need a few more watts.

I couldn't agree more. How do you like the 1524 sealed vs open? Is it more ideal for a tube head or overall?

I generally use it with the ports open, but with some tube heads, it sounds more controlled with them plugged.

Both of those cabs do well with tube heads (in general).

I love my Crate 2x15 cab. Not only is it relatively light, sound excellent even after 15 years of abuse, but it will balance on two casters/bottom side edge and thus appear to defy gravity.

In the 60s I used a Standel 2X15, SS with probably 100 watts. Loved the detachable wheels on the side - made rolling it around a breeze. I think it had only three knobs; volumn, bass & treble. It worked for me. Blew a lot of cheap speakers until I changed to JBL. As far as how it sounded, I never liked it because the other bands in town used either Ampeg, Marshall, or the huge Sunn bass cabs. I always wanted one of those.

I've been jamming a v4b into 2 svt 15e cabs. Love it. Had a mesa 4x10 which I really liked but tough to move around, I think it was 90 pounds or so.

The 2 seperate 15 are a breeze to move (especially with caster on the bottom one).

I hear that, 12's are a good balance for the finger players too...many of these cabs can exhibit more midrange content than a set of 10's of the same manufacturer. My reference for this is the Mesa powerhouse cabs, 4x12 and 8x10
