Ibanez ATK initial impressions

The model number for the Guitar Center Limited Edition ATK is ATK3EXBK1.
If you go to Guitar Center's website and you click on "Clearance" it will open a PDF file where you will find the ATK3EXBK1 listed.

I just bought this bass about a week ago and I have to say that it is probably the best bass I've ever played. Although when I brought it home it had all kinds of wiring issues that I had to fix myself. It had a problem with horrible buzzing.

I had this issue for a while also. Since I've switched to my Genz Benz head, the difference for me is now substantial and I use all 3, based on what I need for each song.

I picked up my ATK maybe a year ago on ebay for $250, and it's the best $ I've ever spent. I can get scarily close to all 3 sound I want (P, Jazz, 'Ray) with 10 seconds of effort, which makes the thing indispensible for me. Plus, it's built rock solid.

I know it sounds cliche, but I really do like the thing more every time I play it.

It's a kill switch so I can leave the bass plugged in without draining the battery between sets. The Licensed by Schaller tuners do work fine, but the original owner of my bass beat the living crap out of them; he also widened the D and G string slots on the nut because he played Jimmy Haslip-style. That's why I replaced the tuners and nut.

I saw this and broke down and picked one up. They had 2 and after comparing them for a while I came away with one that had a slightly thinner neck. The electronics arent out of this world but it plays great. Has anyone replaced the p/u in one of these things. I imagine its a pretty big pain.

dont know why you would want to, that pickup is pretty much what defines this bass and sets it apart from other basses. I love it, but I guess you can replace anything with knowledge and tools

I used to do that too, but I adapted to this bass. I still rest my thumb on the corner of the pickup when I am grooving away, and when I want to get a really mellow/dub-like tone (especially when on the "B") I move my thumb up to the edge of the pickguard by the neck. Kind of hard to explain but the pickguard is thick enough for me to rest my thumb there and get some really bassy notes. If I am playing any other string than the "B" I just anchor my thumb on the string below the one I am playing. Hope that helps :)

At first it bugged me as I used to the same, but I've also adapted my playing so as to no longer even think about it. I use the humbucker as a thumbrest when digging in, and even moving from the top to the bottom of the pickup can change your sound pretty dramatically. For the big, round stuff I get along just fine playing up by the neck without a thumbrest and sometimes even use the base of the neck as a thumbrest when playing something really mellow.
