If you're directing this at me, I only have a 5 string BTB675. The factory preamp is allegedly Bart-designed but made by Ibanez. I did a pup and pre swap last month and installed genuine Bart pups and an NTMB pre. I had to mod the cavities slightly to fit the new pups, see post #650 of this thread for some pictures. The difference was noticeable but not huge IMHO.

I don't know what the 676 has from the factory.

Deoxit will clean up the pot and probably the jack as well as long as lock/joints are all still solid, in addition to bringing back a lot of tone (clean them all, not just mid). When I replaced the jack I couldn't find any drop in replacements so sanded out the inside of the jack tube around .5mm, and even then still used a rubber mallet to bang it into position.

Obviously new batteries. I used 9v ikea for a while simply because they were cheaper, but switching to a 'real' made a difference. Whether it was better or not is a personal judgement, but was not a placebo battery effect - had to tweak inputs a bit because the signal was hotter than before.

My 406qm hasn't gotten much love in the last couple years as well, but I found thicker strings always did much more for tone than thinner (like .140 vs .120/115 for B, and work up). Nickel vs steel didn't matter much iirc.

PS: Is Glenfiddich swill? I can't get into it to save my life, but it's supposed to be an actual Scottish favorite. Laphroaig, Glenmorangie, et al tho, A+.

I cleaned the pots when I was still playing but had issues still with the mid (mid-sweep actually), hopefully not needing a replacement (I'd have to open her up and check the values but I'm assuming it's not a common set of stacked pot values). Maybe it just needs a bit more cleaning, either way, it's on the list!

I don't think it's just cleaning that the socket needs, it was almost like the connections were too far apart, maybe pickup a replacement (should just be a standard TRS neutrik locking jack).

Which Glenfiddich? The 12 yo is a fairly standard entry level single malt, it'll be one of the biggest sellers (mainly because it's a standard entry level malt). Bud must be one of the biggest, if not the biggest, selling beers, wouldn't call it good!

The Glenfiddich 15 year old (Solera) isn't much more expensive but is a completely different beast, really nice, very fruity taste and a great summer time malt. My favourite regular is Caol Ila 12 yo though! Drop by the Single Malt thread:

I was just thinking about getting some Chromes for my BTB. Right now the sound is pretty Cliff Burton-y, but getting a rounder, JPJ-like tone would be handy for standing out in the band I play in. Anyone have sound clips?

That said, I agree with what you said about Glenfiddich. I tried some while I was on a trip to England and Scotland, and the 15 was MUCH better than the 12. The 15 was actually the only alcohol I tried over there (I'm 20, so I took the chance to try legally) that I actually liked.

This thing has been on quite a journey since I last posted. When I bought it, I was having issues with distortion on the E and low B when I did anything more than feather the string, so I ripped out the preamp thinking it was faulty. Nope. Eventually I ripped out the Bartolini MK2's and put in a set of EMGX's, a P in the neck and a TW in the bridge. Wired it Volume Volume Tone Tone, and MAN.

WOW. Solved all my problems, this bass is my go to for everything, I play in a black gospel group, experimental metal bands, rock groups, all sorts, and this thing slays in everything I do.

I might take another step and try the 18V wiring option, supposedly there's more definition and headroom but I'm not entirely convinced, we'll see what happens!

I'll upload some soundclips soon once my LaBella's come in.
