I've seen the Royal Marines practising beach landings with those (or something similar, at least). Quite noisy.

Yes, the Spitfire is my absolute favorite aircraft to look at- is the pic of a Mk IX? I'm partial to the Mk I & II, or the really late ones, like XIV's & XXII's.

This is a model, but for me the coolest thing about this car is that the first memory of it is as an early(60s)Hot Wheels car. I didn't even realize there was a real car like this. It is jet-powered.

Darryl Greenamyer piloted this highly-modified Grumman F8F Bearcat to the world's record for piston-engined aircraft back in the 70s. Beyond the Rolling Stones, some cool stuff happened in the 70s- I was there.
This, I believe, is a replica of the French-built SPAD that Eddie Rickenbacker, America's top ace(26 victories)of WW-I flew at the end of the war. It was powered by a Hispano-Suiza V-8.

Not only was it turbine powered, but it was also 4 wheel drive. That model has smaller front tires than the real one, where all the tires were the same size; take a look. I remember the '67 Indy 500 really well --many of us were rooting really hard for it to break, which it did. It was a shoe in for the win as far as speed though...

Prolly, Allisons were common, but some had Rolls-Royce engines too back then IIRC.
I saw one modern era (more or less) hydro race on Lake Washington, most but not all the boats were turbine powered and ridiculously fast. Seafair is quite the party too.
