Sweet, that was one I was kinda looking for!
Happy to be of service
This particular pic is hot-linked, but if I need to I can scan the identical image from one of my boat reference books and upload that to my own photobucket account. It's just too outrageous a concept to pass by, in a thread all about HiPo vehicles and the engines that power them
Many people back in those days thought Gar Wood was already going overboard with the previous Miss America versions, which used two V-12's (mostly Packards, but in one case Harry Miller built up a pair from scratch). In the case of Miss America X, Wood obviously crossed the line from overkill to "good old American wretched excess"
Each of those four Packards was running something like 15 lbs of boost through gear driven roots-blowers being fed by a pair of huge Holley carbs. Wood never released the actual dyno results, but they were rumored to have made 2000+ horsepower apiece. Each pair of engines on either side were rigidly coupled together at the crankshafts, effectively making one modular V-24. Kind of the same concept that the Italians used for the Macchi air racer. As you might expect, keeping the final-drive gearboxes from going kablooie was a major undertaking in itself
I just love this pic for another reason besides the engines:
Sitting on the left hand side of the driver (Gar Wood) is a fellow by the name of Orlin Johnson, Wood's long-suffering #1 mechanic. Everytime I see the expression on his face, I can almost see him thinking
In less than one hour from now, I will need to change 96 spark plugs, adjust 192 valves, and completely tear down the gearboxes to check gear tooth and bearing wear
AGAIN !!!
