I wouldn't mind as long as it was a reverse P that also had a jazz pickup in the bridge position. All wrapped up in a nice ergonomically shaped body with a neck through design. Like this.....

If you could only have one bass, would it be a Precision?

I wouldn't mind as long as it was a reverse P that also had a jazz pickup in the bridge position. All wrapped up in a nice ergonomically shaped body with a neck through design. Like this.....
my main bass was for a really long time a Spector NS 5 . I love everything about this high end instrument.
But then I thought to myself i need to have a conventional standard Fender Precision bass so i opted for an AVRI '63 precision. Ever since I got my fender it has been my go to bass for recording and for practice i almost exclusively use the fender with my band. It has a 19mm spacing it has just two knobs it has a 7.25 " radius which is almost the opposite of the Spector. So i thought to myself it's a challenging instrument and that would help better my techniques and skills. I play advanced tapping , double thumping, lots of fast licks and runs i play chords (i play in a post-progressive band) and i have never thought I would on a Precision bass but now the simplicity of the tone and the plug and play with extremely minor to no adjustments whatsoever to the knobs plus the fact that it plays incredibly well with effect pedals and use a lot of effects and the fact that it sounds incredible in recordings and that it pushes me to change the position of my plucking hand (the right) hand much more to obtain specific sounds than the tweaking of knobs makes it my only choice.

After owning a PJ for six or seven years, I would replace that with another PJ.
I don't see any reason why you'd get whomped just for asking that question. I actually find it an interesting one considering how different (yet in some cases the same) opinions about basses and bass tone are today compared to 20 years ago.
In answer to your question, I like a PB just fine. I even own two of them. But if I did have to pick only a single bass to own, a PB would not be my first choice.

I may be opening a can of worms saying what I going to say, but, IMHO, with an Yamaha BB 424 in hands there's no need to a P bass at all.
Yep. A Precision Bass for me, if I could only have one. I'm glad I can still have Jazzes, StingRays, Ricks and Hofners, though!
Yes, actually in the process of getting rid of all my non P style basses, the sound is just exactly what I need and I can always make it work, been fighting with some of my other basses, I can get them there just usually takes a while.
If I could only have one bass, I'd be happy with whatever bass it was.

The P bass is Iconic and great but I fear the main reason that it is requested to be used is due to sound engineers and producers. The P bass is the go to bass to record and run through a board due to that is what 'sound people' know how to mix.
Personally I enjoy the sound of a J bass better but many of my bass heroes play(ed) P basses
