If you could only have one bass, would it be a Precision?

The original standard Precision will always be the granddaddy of them all, however some significant upgrades have come down the pike such as beefed up active electronics and extended range tunings. My desert island bass would be one of my Peavey Cirrus USA active fivers.

It would be something lighter, with a skinnier neck...that sounds as much like a P as possible.

Only one? I'd keep my '81 G&L L2000 Series E with two mods: single coil switching and OMG on/off mode. This makes it able to fill the role of an L2000 (both early and later models w/o the OMG switch) and an L1000. Which makes it an L3000 For me, an L1000 is a decent P substitute; therefore, I keep this as my one bass and get my P tones covered well enough, and much more.

One bass to do it all for me would be an Ibanez sr of some sort. Some models can do almost any sound. P is too restricting to me.

Nope. If I were to pick a "one and only" bass, it would be a neck-through, 24-fret 5-string with a slim-profile, flatter-radius neck and humbuckers. Pretty much the antithesis of P-Bass.

I've used a vintage P-Bass in a studio project that felt and sounded magical. Some would call that the "perfect" bass. Heck, I've once played a Fodera- something several people would call the "perfect" bass. However, those "perfect" basses simply weren't... me.

It's like another dating analogy. The "perfect person" may not be right for you.

This is a tough call. A Jazz with the neck pup solo'd and tone rolled back a bit can get me in "P territory", but I can't get a P to sound like a J, no matter what. Having said that, I would probably still go with the Precision.

If I had to sell all of my basses except one, I would keep the jazz that I'm holding in my avatar. It is a stellar instrument in every way, and I can coax 90% of what I need from it, tonally. The other 10% is a compromise that I gladly live with.

My P/Js are nice but they are not the basses that you'll have to pry from my cold, dead hands.

That is a beautiful J you have there, the black blocked necks look good on any bass, in my opinion of course. I have a nice P that I love, Noir edition, but recently I started playing my J again and I agree with your 'stellar instrument' evaluation. I just love the sound. A noir-edition J bass would be killer, though.
