Although I own 3 basses I only play one. A Fender Jazz Aerodyne. The other 2 are in their cases and may never see the light of day again.

If you could only have one bass, would it be a Precision?

Yes – without a second thought. Not hard at all. I use different basses for looks, for variety/fun, and for convenience (short neck basses), not for need. I'm fine with just a P. They look the best, feel the best, and sound the best to me.
I play a Ps, a J, and various short necks around town. I might not even play my Ps a majority of the time in those cases (I lean heavily toward the short necks, out of laziness/apathy). But every time I've ever gone on a real tour (which meant I had to narrow it down to one bass to use night after night for a month or longer, and that I was more serious about the gigs), it's been a P, like the one in my latest touring rig, before I picked up the '58 reissue:

There is no such thing as "you can have only one bass". Why bother asking?
There's choice, there's circumstances and circumstances can be overcome, if so desired.
I DO have a Jazz (variant), a Stingray SR5, an ESP fretless, and I might just bloody well get a Precision.

My L-2000 was my only bass until I finished my J build last November. I think we soloed for a year and a half? I don't remember anymore. Anyway, no, my answer is an L-2000.
I would if I was sponsored and the specific instruction was to only play a Precision bass.

P-Basses are awesome and I'd have no issue using one. ...but I love my jazz bass. That's only one if I had to choose. Not saying that I would choose any jazz bass over any p-bass. I would just choose my jazz bass over any bass. Not just P-Basses.

Buying my first P caused me to sell the rest of my basses.
After 3+ years of the P being my only bass, I started regrowing my stable, which eventually included another P bass.

Yeah I could make a P-bass work for everything I do. I have more P-basses in my collection than any other kind of bass. But I use all the basses I have.

Playing along with the hypothetical question - if I had to narrow it down to just one, it would be the 2001 Thunderbird. Second place is the 1968-ish EB-2d that I have had for 35 years or so.
Does a P/J Ibanez Mikro bass count as a form of P bass?
I don't think so, but that's it.
My main bass with updated pickups.
Both really like the P/J combination, as I always use both pickups full on, and the quite short scale.
Ideally I guess I'd play a custom made 26,8" scale bass, likely with a P/J configuration as well, but I don't have that kind of money.

Depends on the situation i'm presented with. I know for my own album i played my Parts Pbass except for one track where my RIC replica was utilized.
I vote other, based on the short scale bass i've built - it's got a good solid tone that's reminiscent of a pbass midrange in a single tv jones pickup.
