If you could only have one bass, would it be a Precision?

FWIW, I will be answering P bass.

I said "not a P-bass". I think my 4-94 style Carlo is what I would choose.

However, I do like P-basses quite alot and if the only bass I were able to have was a P-bass I'd be fine with that too. I think a good P-bass could cover just about anything I need to play and if it were a Bob Glaub, that would be icing on the cake!

I guess I'm stuck on the hypothetical thing. In contemplating my answer, I can't help but ponder what cruel fate would would knock on my door and impose this condition upon me. As a gigging musician, I need a minimum of two instruments. And I do love Fenders. But if I can only own one, it must mean I'm not gigging or playing any more, and already have one foot in the grave. In that case, the one bass I'd choose to keep would be purely for sentimental reasons...and it wouldn't be a Fender.

So, I play upright bass exclusively because, for some reason, I'm completely uninspired and disinterested by electric basses.

But if I were to play an electric bass... yeah, it'd be a P-bass of some sort. Because that's the sound that gets me going.

It's a 64. Whatever they used then. It's pretty generic but very special to me.

I had a 64 once. The seen on your fingerboard reminded me of it. I loved the wood. Tragically, the bass was just worn out.

My answer is this: If said P-Bass could have a Jazz neck, and a Jazz bridge pickup, then yes. I could make do with that one bass if I absolutely had to. I don't think I would be happy with only a Precision pickup for the rest of my life, though.

I have had a Jazz (didn't care for it) and my beloved Ric. I acquired my first P in December. It has been everything I hoped it would be and more. It's flexibility is pretty amazing considering how simple it is. It just works. So I'd probably go with a P. My caveat to this is that I've never owned a short scale or anything with active electronics so my experience is a bit limited compared to others on this thread.

Nope.
I find i prefer 2-pickup basses in general.
I've had a couple of Precision-type basses in my lineup for years, and they just tend to not get used that much. (Even though they're very nice, and great sounding basses. Same is true for my 4000).
For gigs, I take my 4004 model Ricks, my Epiphone Embassy Pro, my GL JB2,or tonight for the first time, my Veillette-Citron 2-pickup 4 string.

If I, myself, could only have one bass? My Ibanez Artist Bass. Not sure I want to live in a world where I could have only one, though.
However, my number one, go-to, default, bass for any occasion is a Fender Jazz. I'll concede that Leo got it right the first time around with the P, but I'll argue he got it better with the J.

I'd REALLY miss the other 12 basses though...
