You know, I’m close to agreeing with you on that solo, but as that was an overdub, I would have been content to just be a fly on the wall during that session. That got me to thinking…while I realize this is all a fantasy, if one was to have actually played bass on a particular track, wouldn’t that alter history in some manner? You wouldn’t necessarily play the same thing.
There are two situations that I would have been happy to just sit in the corner and observe; all of the Kind Of Blue sessions, and then the tracking for Scott Walker’s “The Old Man’s Back Again”, just to see what Dave Richmond was doing on that.

My serious answer would be playing Darryl Jones’ bass part on Sting’s ‘Bring On The Night’ live recording. Omar Hakim on drums and Kenny Kirkland on piano… dream scenario!!
I just remembered a real life version of this topic that I witnessed. I saw Soundgarden at Hammerstein Ballroom on their King Animal tour. It was between songs and Chris was talking to the audience. He spots a guy holding a “Can I play Outshined?” sign. Chris invites the guy on stage, hands him a guitar (in the wrong tuning but later swapped for one in tune) and the dude played Outshined with Soundgarden! One of the craziest moments I’ve ever seen at a show, it was so cool. Someone captured it and put it on YouTube:

But going with the flow of the thread, I'd love to stand in for Billy Talbot with Neil Young and Crazy Horse for any of the long jamier songs. Cortez the Killer would be great. And I don't really care about the venue.

cheeseballs in cowtown live (of course) with Bela Fleck (esp if sam bush was around to add the mandolin) and Vic stays on stage so i can stand right next to him and watch and listen to him do the solos!
this is weird because i am a blues rock guy at heart, an 80’s/90’s cover band bassist by trade and a HUGE fan of jazz bassists in general. go figure, but there it is.
