IK TONEX pedal

Bergantino - Laptop and Tonex.

I absolutely fallen love with some of the captures on Tonenet. The Noble preamp is sooooooo good. Only scratches the surface so far, but even our guitarist went out and bought one after hearing / trying mine. This thing is a gamechanger.

Im loving mine as well, but didn’t notice the noble preamp on tone net. Thanks for the heads up.

I love my Helix Floor. I have no intention of using the Tonex with my Helix - I feel the Helix is its own beast, and it does what it does very well indeed! But to add other pedals to it defeats the all-in-one aspect of the thing IMO. I don’t really plan to try and replace the Helix either, although that is always on the table if the experiment is a wild success! My initial plan is to use the Tonex with a few other pedals - maybe adding an HX Effects. This would be a pedalboard alternative to my Helix. For science!

I am soooo close to pulling the trigger on one of these.

Cool!
Do you plan to do your own captures?
We need more bass gear captures for these things!

I don't have any gear people would like to be captured. I'm one who will benefit from those who do have interesting gear they've captured. I see several third party sites now offering captured devices for guitar, but nothing much yet for bass.

Note that if you do capture that you need a PC with good "GPU" power. I see many youtube reviewers complaining about how long it takes to process a capture in the Tonex software. The trick is the better the GPU processing power you have, the better the speed.

Here's an interesting video, good guitar players, but they did not do an Advanced Tonex capture. Tonex still did great, but I can't help but think it might have done better if they did an Advanced capture.

For as much experience and musicianship as these guys have, they still have a hard time telling differences.

Good plan, but I don't see the Tonex as an "All in One". For example, it doesn't have any modulation effects. I think it's good in chains with multiple other effects.

I use a Tonex on a multi purpose board for both guitar and bass. Lots of other pres and pedals. I play both guitar and bass through Frfr PA cab. Sounds great. Couldn’t be happier. Currently modeling my other bass pres and IRs in Tonex to make them midi selectable since none of the pres have presets or midi control.

Whilst FedEx fumbles my package between truck to warehouse to truck again, to mitigate some of my anxiety I went on tone.net to check out some bass noises. I am trying not to get mad at the software yet, so I only spent a little time listening to some captures, but some fella named Dennisward has recently dropped some that seem quite usable on first listen! No affiliation, just thought I’d share my observations.
Excitement cautiously builds…IMG_2115.jpeg

There are tons of useable presets for bass - From clean to warm and goey and futher on to distorted and straight up fuzz.

I have a B15 with 3 different gain 'stages' on Bank 1 - Bank 2 and 3 are various Trace Elliott gear - Bank 4 is exotic stuff like a Noble etc.

All of the presets was on the Tonenet, completely free and ALL of them can be used live or in the studio.

My first impressions for what they’re worth…
Yesterday I unboxed and simply plugged in my guitar auditioning all the factory presets through my Rivera 55/12 set as “flat” as possible (I didn’t disable cab sims on the Tonex) - I didn’t hook the pedal up to my computer at all. Sounds ran the gamut from meh to really good. I did change some of the TMB settings just to see how it reacted. I like how the EQ works - it’s much more predictable than the typically interactive analog pots on a tube amp. Bass presets (a whopping 6) were pretty lame/unremarkable.
This morning I hooked up to the Interwebs, updated firmware, and ran through a bunch of bass captures through my near field studio “monitors” (Cerwin Vega bookshelf speakers w/8” woof). I found a few IK that I liked and moved to the pedal, and I found a few Tone.net for which I did the same. I don’t understand the vitriol the software receives on the Gear Page. It was really easy to use IMO. I have a Mac, and it worked with my presonus interface without a hitch. I could drag and drop models from Tone.net and Tonex premium - doing overwrites no problem. It was easy to swap or duplicate presets around within the pedal using the software as well. I will say IK’s website is not helpful on how to set up the device (unless i just missed it) - I wound up using instructions on Sweetwater’s website.
After I finished dinking around in the software, I hooked the pedal up to my EV P1200 power amp and 3x12 cab - running through the bass presets I had just loaded. A few sounded great! And some were simply usable. I did ZERO knob twiddling. So, it’s clear to me that this device takes (and will take) some work to get it to a usable state. My feelings are that it will be worth the effort! I like it!
Next will be to run through some captures for guitar, but there are SO MANY… :jawdrop:

Went back and played through headphones (AKG K240 MKII) and really liked what I was hearing. I especially like how the resonance control has the ability to remove low end bloat on guitar patches without thinning the tone excessively. I still haven’t done much EQ work with any of the bass patches yet - I will update when I do.
The reverb sounds pretty good too. Initially I didn’t love it, but the headphone experience made clear some of the details in the reverb trails that are textured and dynamic! The caveat here is the Spring 2 & Spring 3 are not very good IMO. Spring 1 is the best, but don’t expect any drip. My Ventris is so much better, but it *IS* a reverb pedal after all. :p
The exploration continues!

I’m thinking about pulling the trigger on one of these as well. A huge part of “my sound” is from my amp, but that setup barely fits in my car and is very heavy. I’d also love to be able to send that sound to FOH or into a DAW/console from my pedalboard. So I figure I could use this to “capture” that tone, and then any extra stuff in the library is just icing on the cake - am I correct in my assumption that such an application is where the ToneX shines? I don’t have the budget for something like a Kemper or QC.

Cheers!

EDIT: it appears this doesn’t have a balanced/XLR output, which I guess is fine but may necessitate the addition of a Direct Box, right?

I spent about 30 minutes dialing in EQ on three of the bass captures I downloaded. I am very pleased with the outcome. Punchy, present , and dynamic! Natural sounding saturation as well. The depth control works the same kind of magic with bass as it does guitar. A little too fat? Take the depth down a bit. And vice versa… good stuff! And I don’t even feel the need to add compression yet.
