I guess since Christian McBride was one of Ray's proteges, you could **imagine** he might have one of his basses.......and I've heard that Ray had quite a few lying around at different phases of his life.;)

Right now, Esperanza is about commercial packaging, and the Gage bass is a commercial instrument. I think it was a fitting choice for the White House performance.

Check it out, jazz.com says it's true.

An apropos torch-passing occurred last May, when Christian McBride took possession of an acoustic bass that had belonged to Ray Brown [1926-2002], his prime influence, mentor, and frequent employer in the 90s ensemble Super Bass, along with John Clayton. We had a very fatherly relationship, McBride said in the cover feature in Downbeats August issue, which cited his victory as Acoustic Bassist of the Year in the magazines 57th annual critics poll. I dont want to sound selfish, but I feel I SHOULD have it, since John has one of Rays other ones.

I get it, perhaps you feel that only basses Ray ever "owned" were his main longtime players, the two you've mentioned. But it seems that Christian feels that he has taken possession of one that Ray loved just as much as those two.:cool:

For the OP, having a crush on Esperanza is kinda cute!;) Nothing wrong with that at all.:D

i think i know the story about this bass. someone correct me if im wrong please. it is a bass made by a phillipino maker that was bought by bill cosby and given as a gift to ray. i think ray may have used it on the road for a while at the end of his career, but i dont think it was ever his main bass. i dont think christian was given the bass by ray. that bass was for sale at david gage's shop, and i was looking at it online for a while. when i finally emailed sam to make an appointment to go try it sam told me that christian had bought it a few days prior. im pretty sure there is a thread on talkbass about that bass made by someone who played it when it was in gage's showroom

There's a Donger in every town, most of them say "Ding" before introducing themselves as "Dong" for short.

Nothing wrong with having a crush on her at all- just as long as you are not stalking her or sending her engagement rings in the mail! :D

Besides, she is going to marry ME, in a quiet ceremony with just a few family & friends in Gibralter by the Archbishop of Canterbury.;)
