Hey Marc!
Welcome to TB (TalkBass).
A few tribal things to get you up to speed.
1. Carrots
Something that’s not an acronym that you’ll run into here is the term “carrots” which is an expression unique to this forum. It has multiple applications. But it’s primarily used when you want to say “doesn’t matter” or “I don’t care” or (if a choice in a poll) to say “none of the above.”
2. “Fire the drummer”
Usually prefixes some advice being given and not meant to be taken seriously. For example, somebody asks what they should do about their amp making a weird noise. Somebody will often begin by saying:”First, fire the drummer. Then get it checked by a competent tech.”
3. “What’s the best ______ for _____?”
This goes back many years to someone asking what model bass was the best choice for playing metal. Since so much of what gear will work best is entirely dependent on several factors besides the genre of music, it’s become a kind of standing joke around here. So whenever somebody is soliciting opinions about some gear choice they’re making, or are looking for general opinions about something, they’ll often jokingly begin by asking something like: “Anybody know what’s the best bass for ambient?”
There’s a bunch of others. But those are the ones you’ll run into most often.
Welcome to the club.![]()
