I'm pretty new here, sooooooooo...

I'm having a difficult time understanding some of these posts, because of all of the acronyms.

Maybe... Y'all would be kind enough to "educate" Me, on some of these?

Let's start here... ***, is NBD!!!???

Thank You, kindly.

Hey Marc!

Welcome to TB (TalkBass).

A few tribal things to get you up to speed.

1. Carrots
Something that’s not an acronym that you’ll run into here is the term “carrots” which is an expression unique to this forum. It has multiple applications. But it’s primarily used when you want to say “doesn’t matter” or “I don’t care” or (if a choice in a poll) to say “none of the above.”

2. “Fire the drummer”
Usually prefixes some advice being given and not meant to be taken seriously. For example, somebody asks what they should do about their amp making a weird noise. Somebody will often begin by saying:”First, fire the drummer. Then get it checked by a competent tech.”

3. “What’s the best ______ for _____?”
This goes back many years to someone asking what model bass was the best choice for playing metal. Since so much of what gear will work best is entirely dependent on several factors besides the genre of music, it’s become a kind of standing joke around here. So whenever somebody is soliciting opinions about some gear choice they’re making, or are looking for general opinions about something, they’ll often jokingly begin by asking something like: “Anybody know what’s the best bass for ambient?”

There’s a bunch of others. But those are the ones you’ll run into most often.

Welcome to the club.

Thanks for the "welcome."
I'll be sure to wipe my feet, wash my hands, and remove My hat, before sitting at anyone's table.
I think Marc has already been 'indoctrinated' in another thread, and came up smelling like FOVHYN...

... not an actual acronym... I just felt like typing random, capitalized letters, just then...

Welcome to TB again, Marc! Have fun!
Yeah, I may need counseling, after that thread. Although... I'm POSITIVE that someone, involved in it, DEFINITELY DOES.

All kidding aside it’s good to have you here.

With each new member, the collective experience and knowledge pool grows. That’s a valuable resource to have at your disposal. And the main reason why we keep coming back to share, argue, discuss, split hairs, recommend, and kid each other about everything bass when we do. Because from out of all that raw chaff some real gold gets refined.

Maybe it’s not the most efficient way to distill wisdom. But it gets the job done just the same.

@Marc DLarosa Welcome to TalkBass. I have another for you.

GAS = Gear Acquisition Syndrome. You will see a multitude of beautiful basses posted on TalkBass and you want to own them all! Ha
Oh... I've had that for years. At the beginning of 2017, I had over 100 Guitars/Basses. Been collecting, for about 34 years. Been selling them off, on another site. I think that I'll PROBABLY stop, when I get down to 20(ish)...

I'm pretty sure that this is My gang of KEEPERS... (Basses, that is.)

Actually... I recently decided to NOT part with My green Spectorcore.

Welcome. Before you can become a true TBer, you must answer these questions:
1) which strings are best?
2) which bass is best for (pop)(punk)(death metal)(etc.)(etc.)
3) Does anyone like Rickenbackers?

Tell me about that Aria Pro II TriSound Bass!
Pre "Thor".
I think that the "build quality", is up there with ANY "boutique" bass of the era. Alembic, etc... Tonal variations, are amazing. Super well balanced. I don't even feel as though I'm playing a "little" bass. I've had Her, around 25 years. Best part...? I paid $125.00, in the original hardshell case!!!
Even though, I'm not really into short scale basses... She will never leave. Nor will The HB-8.

Just so Marc has a shot, here are some wrong answers.
1) Metal
2) P-Bass, P-Bass, P-Bass, P-Bass, Rickenbacker
3) Only on NBD.

I've been on this forum for a long time, formerly as greybeard and now as Ampslut and I hate these dang acronyms. It doesn't take that much more time or effort to type out New Bass Day. I just think they make things a bit tribal or klanish, like you are not a member of the "club" if you don't know all the acronyms.
QFT!!!

;) :D

To be fair, TB is very much a club. I have a couple students who I referred to TB. They were both scared off by the hive mentality. I am pretty sure one of them asked about mixing cabs...
