I'm thinking of going vegetarian

Why do so many of you wear leather shoes:confused:

I am not joking either.

It's called vegan leather and it's usually made out of Vegetan, Lorica or Cork Oak leather.

As to the topic, I stopped eating red meat as it was hard to digest, but I still eat fish and chicken. I won't ever become a vegetarian or vegan and I miss carne asada burritos, but I'm making it through.

I've been vegan for some time now,I'm not on a special diet or whatever. I've been smoking the same amount, drinking the same amount of alcohol.I'm better then ever,I feel better&healthier.

But what really matters is,I don't feel terrible after any meal,I can have a good nights sleep,I caused many murders but not any more.

Sorry I gotta call misinformation on this.

I've been vegan (no animal products whatsoever for ethical reasons) since 1996. I have never had any problems with lack of nutrients and I don't supplement at all. I just eat a health, varied diet. Its based on fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, nuts etc. I generally dont eat junk food or fast food.

The only two things you need to make sure is in your diet on a very regular basis is iron and b12. Dark green leaf vegetables for iron and soy milk for b12 works for me. Protein is a non-issue. If you educate yourself you'll be fine. Dont let the fear-mongering get to you. The FDA has approved the vegetarian diet as safe and actually recommends it because its much lower in refined sugars and cholesteral. Its much healthier if you are your responsible.

You'll get alot of flack on the veg choice, but stick to your guns. It has to come from the heart otherwise its very hard to keep to it. Nobody can force you to do it.

Google for the Vegetarian Resources Group.

Also "Diet for A New America" by John Robbins is a great book that I recommend for sound advice on nutrition and the positive effects a veg diet has on your health, the environment and its benefits to other humans.

Good luck with it!

Edit: Here's a pic of me to prove I am not an anemic dwarfed out nerd!

I knew this would happen, not everyone's body is the same, for one, but it's awesome that it works for you, and I'll state this again: I strongly recommend anyone interested in a soy heavy diet to research the possible adverse effects of soy on your body. That said, I'm stepping out of this thread for good, it's for some odd reason an ugly subject.

We were, then had kids and got away from it.

I say more power to those who can, without being judgemental or shoving PITA crap on other people. Just as it's OK to be gay, Reborn Christian , transexual or whatever, but don't force your views on me or think your better than me.

I saw the somewhat recent news story / clips on those poor cows that could not walk being herded to slaughter, being beaten, shocked & finally speared with fork lifts still alive loading them like live firewood.

It's hard to go order that burger after seeing that, for me. But one does have to understand something has to die, so other things can live and is natures way. I really think its stupid when people try to make their carnivorous pets vegan. Your going against nature.

I still eat meat but like most things today, just look the other way when comes to our societies major issues / injustices and tend to focus on my own life.

Has anyone to see how the Japanese raise Kobi Beef, one of the most expensive and supposedly delicious beef ?

Their primary belief is to raise the best beef possible comes from having the cow/steers to have the happiest lives possible. The cows are played music in their stalls, kept very clean, get to go to pasture everyday, get massages, even get to drink a little wine. The happiest life possible for them.

When the time comes to kill them, they have ritual prayers and the cow is killed with dignity. I believe it is OK to eat animals as long as they are treated with some humanity and not made to suffer horrible lives.

That's funny but I too have trouble digesting red meat. I too, eat mostly Chicken, Turkey & fish.

Kids change things,If I had a kid I'd feed them with whatever is needed. If they choose to be non-vegans,I'd buy them the meat they want/need.

Trying to turn carnivorus pets into vegans? Bull%+^'! Humans are omnivores so that we can live w/o one kind.
Its as stupid as feeding a cow with fish&chicken if you feed a dog with grass.

So you eat Kobe beef everyday?

Mrs Relic is a vegetarian, I'm not. She carried our son for 9 months as a vegetarian, and gave birth to a healthy robust boy as a vegetarian, 3 years later our son is still as healthy as an ox and is built like a brick wall. Incidentally, he hates meat..both her and I encourage him to eat meat from time to time as we both believe that at least a little bit is good for his developing body. When he gets old enough he'll make his own choice.
Nothing wrong with it. My only advice is don't preach about it. Just look at it as a personal choice and allow others to make their own personal choice.
We carnivours may do well to remember the same :)

I've been off of red meat for about 15 years now. It's mostly for digestive reasons - every time I eat it, I feel like i have a bowling ball in my belly. I still eat chicken and fish, and still eat butter. I'm 43, in good health, decent shape (6'2", 180), and my last cholesterol test showed 137. My brother (3 years younger) is an ethical vegetarian and exercise nut (swimming, biking, etc.). He has no body fat to speak of (6'0", 155), and low cholesterol as well. Our family history of cholesterol isn't the best, but we're doing what we can.

If you choose to go vegetarian or partially vegetarian, make sure you are comfortable with your reasons. Find foods that you really enjoy eating, and make those your main staples. Add to them gradually as you see how your body adjusts. One of the toughest things to do when starting is to not substitute too much starch for the meat. This is my biggest dietary weakness, and my system is never right when i do this...especially as I get older.

Last, don't listen to the haters. There will always be people who say "don't do it". Sounds like you want to try it. Go for it, and if it works for you, great...and if not, also great. You're the one who has to live with your body. Do what it seems to want, and you'll be happy.

EDIT: My 5 year old son eats meat occasionally, as does my wife. It's all good. :)

I'm interested in more science and evolutionary info. from both meat-eaters and vegetarians, if anybody's got any. Both groups have claimed that science/nature intended us to eat a certain way. Some people cite the canine teeth, others the digestive system, etc., etc., and so on, ditto, ditto.

I just think we are built more as opportunistic omnivours than anything hence the features of both and ability to survive as either.

Agreed. Just look at the traditional diets of Arctic dwellers who've inhabitated the region for millennia. And I'm a dang vegetarian, yo (but these very sorts of arguments usually make me keep it to myself).
