No, I don't say that it's a reason to smash a perfectly fine bass - that is NEVER ok imho - but still... The ways of the youth has been looked upon with dismay and

That is a lot different then some kid who thinks he is cool smashing his bass at a school recital and walking off like hot poopie

Ha! If you are an adult at all, your generation started it. They wouldn't do it if they hadn't seen everyone from The Who to Red Hot Chilli Peppers doing it.

Meh. It's an object. And it's an object hopefully owned by those kids. I destroyed bicycles, skateboards, and my dad's golf clubs (hitting rocks and bees with them) growing up.

A bass is no more special than those items. It doesn't represent anything other than an object.....especially to them. It's not a holy grail. It's a thing.

Heck, 20 years from now they may start a thread here about it. "Hey check out this video of me as a dumb kid smashing a $20 pawn shop bass."

Bigger things to worry about for today's children. Much bigger.

Whereas I am an old dude who picked blackberries in the NC summertime heat and sold them for a dollar a gallon to buy my first cheap no name Japanese bass, you can imagine how I feel. I'm thinking that kid has never worked for anything. If he had to work to get that bass, he wouldn't be smashing it.

Totally get what you mean. I didn't quite have to pick fruit but I did mow lawns, trim bushes, wash cars, scrimp, scrounge and save up for a year as a 12 year old to get my first bass, a POS Slammer by Hamer that cost about 100 quid. It's suffered it's share of abuse (mostly accidental) but I could never imagine actually destroying it.

Deeper than that though, I have an odd approach to instruments. I don't think they have any 'soul' or 'mojo' or anything, they are tools to be used for the trade but at the same time they must be respected and treated properly. Seeing someone destroy a perfectly good guitar or bass makes me think of the 12 year old me who did everything he could for one, and I still consider myself lucky.

Any hypothetical kids I have will be taught to treat instruments with respect (they would be growing up in a very musical household anyway) and smashing stuff up for the hell of it is never cool, unless you've gone multi-platinum in which case you can get away with a LOT.

These kids don't have to work for anything. Your generation worked tirelessly to make the place easier to navigate for the generations that followed. Why then blame the kids for behaving exactly as you would expect them to, given the environment their parents (and you) have created? Do you expect them to spontaneously decide that they have to carry out brutal manual labour for minimal wages purely because it is the more 'authentic' thing to do, or because previous generations had to endure this discomfort?

I'm curious only because you are singling out the kids here, despite the fact that your generation did the raising!

I think the first kid is totally awesome rock'n-roll, angry young man angst. I love it! It's even funnier because he looks like a pudgy 12 year old. The kid in the audience asking, "what did the guitar do?" Just puts this over the top for me. If I was famous, I would use this clip in my next video and get this kid the recognition he deserves. Lol. #longliverock

2nd video is just a bunch of d bags thinking they're funny and made a video.

That bass is gonna be fine. That kid is weak! It probably just needs to be re-tuned, that's all.
It's nice to see kids that age playing rock. Most are into the top 40, computer sequenced crap.
