Infuriating Cover Songs

There is a sub genre of bad covers - actors who try to sing - which makes for some good laughs led by William Shatner (more reciting than singing) and David Hasslehoff.
ah yes, the "Summer Blockbuster Trailer Sound."
Also, anyone in this thread caught slandering Taylor Swift will taste my blade.

I accept that this one might be largely personal, but Love Will Tear Us Apart meant so much to me when it came out. Not only (IMO) a classic, brilliant song of its era, but it also mirrored the breakdown of my own long term relationship that was happening at the time the song was in the chsrts. So I hated this when I first heard it, and still do:

Darius net worth is estimated at $14M, so I guess he or his manager knows something. When he covered Wagon Wheel, it hit #1 on Hot Country Songs chart and was eventually triple platinum. Very popular tune for him, even if he simply covered it. I never liked it, but the bar crowd loves to shout out the lyrics, so it became a staple in many of our set lists. Its one song (of many) that I don't enjoy playing, but do it with a smile bc it is liked by many others.
I'm not convinced that's any form of pitch correction or use of autotune as a modulation effect. I think it's two harmonies that are then doubled and the reverb has a low pass to shorten the "sheen" on the reverb tails. I'd need an isolated multitrack to know for sure, but the telltale signs of Antares or Celemony processing aren't popping out to me. Maybe it's a Waves Tune or Izotope Nectar type of pitch correction since I'm not well versed at spotting those, but they're certainly more rare than Celemony's Melodyne for more straight-ahead pitch corretion and Antares Autotune for the stylized modern pop vocal thing (aka the T-Pain vocal). This cover also came out in 2002 when pitch correction certainly existed, but wasn't yet ubiquitous.
On the other hand, I really like the Lemonheads cover of Mrs. Robinson.
Oh yes, we played Wagon Wheel before Rucker ruined it and we played it even more afterwards. I do like that song but prefer the OCMS version over Hootie's.
What kills me is the sheer number of people who believe he wrote it!
There is a certain timelessness to the formula of covering an upbeat pop/rock tune of the past with the instrumentation and production of 90's pop/rock. A lot of 90's pop-punk covers still work.

A band I'm in wanted to cover "stuck in the middle with you".
I know that song (by Stealers Wheel),and so we get to rehearsing it,and the person who suggested the song stops me and tells me I'm playing it wrong. Turns out he'd never heard the original, and was going from a much more raucous cover version. (Jeff Healey,i think). It was a pretty minor difference in accents during the guitar solo. (And I'd never heard that version till we looked it up on youtube).
I still prefer the original....
