Wow there is real aggressive bullspit in this thread. This anger and derision is a real turnoff.

Holy hell...please see post # 15 here. The songwriter, artist, musicians and producers say that track was cut in the snakepit with Mr Messina on guitar doubling Mr Jamerson on bass. Apparently only Ms Kaye and yourself choose to ignore the real evidence, and ONLY Ms Kaye...not Tommy Tedesco or ANY Wrecking Crew musicians or ANY west coast Motown musicians EVER went on the record and seem to recall that session...JUST Ms Kaye. Geez...give me a freaking break.
You are entitled to believe whatever you want. But when you put it out there on a forum, don't be shocked when people take exception with you. And Carol has never once spoke ill of Jamerson. They used to be friends and she tried to help him get work when times were slow for him. That's your interpretation if the situation that she spoke ill of him...an interpretation that is wrong.Final take on this topic for this thread...
Not Yet...I have no need to impress you...just answering your question as to who I am and what I know about this stuff.
I have always maintained that Ms Kaye is a fine musician...not the greatest electric bassist out there, but quite talented and credible as a player. Sadly her credibility as a player is diminished by her lack of credibility as a human being. Instead of telling me not to pick on a sad "old lady", perhaps those same people should tell that sad "old lady" to refrain from speaking ill of the dead, as she has consistantly done to James Jamerson since his death in the 80's . James is not here to defend himself against Ms Kayes slurs and false claims regarding his brilliant legacy...but I AM!
***...Carol Kaye is entitled to have feelings but James Jamersons family is not?
Oh yeah, Claypool is such an innovator. Heard any of this, recorded in late 1971, 18 years before "Suck on This"?
Ever heard Claypool give any credit to Colin Hodkinson? Hodkkinson not only innovated the style, he does it better than Claypool ever dreamed of. Just IMO, so don't get excited.
Sorry, WAY off topic, but it (frizzle) fries me when Claypool is hailed as an "innovator". Nothing wrong with "borrowing" from someone else's style, but a little acknowledgment would be nice. But I guess that'd confuse the people who are re-writing history.
(BTW, check out The Residents' EP's "Duck Stab" and "Buster and Glen", also from the early/mid 70's, to find out where Les got his "innovative" vocal style.)
Yes...so long as you realize that there are liars out there!
BTW...We are reorganizing the 100 Greatest Bass Guitarists list on Digitaldreamdoor.com and Ms Kaye has been given a quite generous spot at #33. Wrecking Crew session ace Joe Osborn sits at # 13, and James Jamerson remains a solid #1.

Trust me...my blood pressure at last taking was 105/70...quite calm. As for Ms Kaye speaking kindly of Jamerson...not true. I've seen her take several digs at him, plus the greatest dig is claiming credit for his work. Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence. Do the research yourself...according to Kaye..."I tried to help Jamerson but there were problems". Yeah...her jealousy was "the problem". As for the tracks cut at Hitsville...there's no dispute amongst those who were there...The Funk Brothers, which is why Standing In The Shadows of Motown was an award winning documentary and the film about The Wrecking Crew can't get enough funding to get it off the ground. The Funks had a sound while The Crew were terrific musicians who did session work.
Wrong again as usual. Jamerson's drinking problem and increasing paranoia brought on by too much drinking, along with an unwillingness to adapt to the times was the problem.Trust me...my blood pressure at last taking was 105/70...quite calm. My band's guitarist went to the premiere of the Wrecking Crew movie a few months ago. Another wrong statement. Also, how long do you think it took Allan to get funding for the Motown movie? It took YEARS. An absolutely ridiculous statement that means absolutely nothing. As for the tracks cut at Hitsville...there's no dispute amongst those who were there...The Funk Brothers, which is why Standing In The Shadows of Motown was an award winning documentary and the film about The Wrecking Crew can't get enough funding to get it off the ground. Name them and show proof, otherwise I'll have to add this to the "more BS you said" pile.Oh yeah...and though you can believe me or not...once you get past her admittedly outstanding technical skill, Carol Kayes legacy amongst most LA studio musicians is that of a somewhat sad joke.
No he can't.I just don't get the need to constantly bang on Carol Kaye around here. It is over the top and appears to only come from her claiming to be on some of the tracks widely accepted to be Jamerson. For all we know she played on an alternate track that wasn't used. Fairly common in those days from what I've heard. Well ya know age does a funny thing to your memory and with her career she is deserving of at least a little slack. Attacking old ladies is in poor taste. You can defend your position without resorting to that.
So now the choice of instrument is what constitutes innovation?I still never heard anybody do what Claypool do on a fretless 6 strings bass.

Either that, or adding another string, or tuning a few steps lower...JimmyM said:So now the choice of instrument is what constitutes innovation?
Just as I suspected...no proof.
SoCal1 said:Technically quite sound, but WHAT did she innovate other than perhaps being the first L.A. session bassist to show up for a session in a mini skirt...
Just as I suspected...no proof.
Thats such a disgustingly sexist potshot at the end
