Interesting article on Premier Guitar - Carol Kaye

How many disputed tunes are we talking about here? How many tunes did Jamerson play on? How many tunes did Carol Kaye play on?

If you read the link I posted, Ms Kaye claims to have played on just about EVERY major tune to come out of Motown...like Detroit (and The Funk Brothers) never existed. The two major songs which really caught her up in her lies were Bernadette (Four Tops) and I Was Made To Love Her (Stevie Wonder)...two of Jamersons most prolific basslines. None of the people she told Slutsky to contact lent an iota of credibility to her claims or backed up her story. She played on NONE of the disputed tunes. I can accept mistakes...just not out and out lies borne out by one individuals stubborn inability to admit she was wrong.

Where's the numbers?

Where's the numbers?

Hello...

I have no idea what "numbers" you're talking about? I posted this link to totally disprove Ms Kayes claims about playing on those tracks. Jamerson never felt appreciated for his genius and largely as a result led to alcohol, drugs, and an unhealthy lifestyle leading to his ultimate demise. Someone who knew better stole a significant part of his and his family's legacy, even when her own contemporaries failed to back up her claims and those who wrote and produced the songs called her claims totally false. To me...someone who steals someone elses legacy is a thief.

This is crazy talk.

Carol Kaye is a fine technical musician (guitarist and bassist). She is also one of the angriest and most bitter people to ever participate in the music industry. We should not confuse her technical skill with the fact that she never created or innovated anything on bass. Her primary claim to fame was The Beach Boys Pet Sounds project where she did little more than play the notes dictated to her by Brian Wilson. The Wrecking Crew were a collaboration of excellent studio musicians on the L.A. music scene who while individually and collectively talented, had no signature sound like The Funk Brothers or the Memphis or Muscle Shoals guys. Despite that...Joe Osborn was the top bassist in that group...not Kaye. Carol Kaye has even taken false credit on several fellow Wrecking Crew member Joe Osborn tracks...so it isn't just Jamersons work that she has falsely claimed credit for, even when the actual other Motown musicians who played those tracks insist that it was James in the snakepit during those sessions...not Kaye who has never even been near Studio A in Detroit in her entire life. At a certain point I would have expected her to show some class and admit her mistake or confusion...but when you tell a lie often enough, I suppose it becomes more and more difficult to face up to the truth and that's the sad and unfortunate part and perhaps the reason why Carol will probably live out her life being the miserable and unhappy person she has become. Quite sad.
Yup, I'm gonna have to go with this one.

Ahem, anyways........... I hate to deviate back on topic after 5 pages but... Thanks for the link to that article Dan, it was most insightful. I had no idea Carol Kaye had suffered after having a motor vehicle accident. Must've been very tough for her not to be able to play like she did for a long time. I'm really glad she's come through all that and can now record again - a fantastic feat at her age.
inspiring stuff.

Just so you know, a link on the internet doesn't "totally disprove" anything. If it did, one could just link to her website, which says that Slutsky (the author of the book on which your link is based) was a lying scumbag who was ultimately involved in a lawsuit against the surviving Funk brothers:

http://www.carolkaye.com/www/library/faq.htm

It's all "he said/she said." Fact is, I find it easy to believe that CK thinks she laid down a couple tracks that really were played by Jamerson (perhaps by her as well in a different session). But to think that Jamerson drank himself to death because CK claimed credit for "Bernadette" is.....crazy talk.

Allen Slutsky devoted 20 years of his life and at one point his entire life savings to research and tell a story. The songwriters and producers, not Slutsky signed the affidavits stating that Jamerson, not Kaye played on those tracks. Hank Cosby and HDH are liars too? I suppose if you want to be totally ridicilous you will take Ms Kayes word over the people who produced the record and paid the musicians...LOL.

As for any legal issues between Slutsky and surviving Funk Brothers...these issues revolved around the post SITSOM touring and his management of the ensemble following the film. I never said that Allen Slutsky was the greatest theatrical manager, but his 20 year quest to research a musical phenomena and the issues he necessarily investigated regarding this absurd Kaye/Jamerson controversey presents the facts and statements by all those who were there, including those whom Carol Kaye claimed could confirm her position and to a person not ONE of them agreed with anything she had to say. The late Gene Page...a legendary producer and arranger actually bursting out laughing when he first heard of Ms Kayes false claims. Chick Rainey paying tribute to Jamerson by performing his friends bassline to Bernadette on the Jamerson memorial project along with Marcus Miller doing the same on I Was Made To Love Her...so I suppose Rainey, Miller, Stanley Clarke, and dozens of other bass legends are all wrong too? ONLY Carol Kaye is telling the truth? And you expect me to take these Carol Kaye "fanboy" posts seriously???

Obviously Jamerson didn't drink himself to death because Carol Kaye falsely claimed credit to Bernadette...or as Ronald Reagan said..."There you go again". What I did say is that Jamerson sought well deserved recognition during his lifetime and really never got it. Even those British basists like McCartney, Bruce, Entwistle, etc who studied and emulated his innovated style didn't even know Jamersons name...only as "the guy who plays bass for Motown" If Kaye had the nerve to make those claims while Jamerson was alive...I'd pity her for what Jamerson would likely have done.

Stealing credit for others artistic achievements for ones own personal self gratification is a horrible thing to do. It's the epitomy of selfishness, egocentrism, and in a way...self hate and insecurity.

Jamerson and his family deserve much better than this...

By the way...I really wrote War and Peace...but it.had the original title...War - What Is It Good For". I turned it into a song which Edwin Starr recorded at Studio A at Motown with The Funk Brothers, and of course...Carol Kaye played bass on the track... OK I admit I stole that scenario from a Seinfeld episode. At least I admit it! LMAO

You guys have too much time on your hands. Do some push ups or go fix something around the house.

I do have a lot of better things to do, but I also devoted the better part of a year of my life to helping The Funk Brothers garner their well deserved Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award (these things just don't happen), and more time representing them on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame Star they were also recognized for and the ceremony is currently pending, so obviously I have a significant self interest in the truth about their legacy being secure, and disputing false claims such as those Ms Kaye has levied along with some other people who have no clue for whatever reason desperately wanting to believe her. I don't care about these Carol Kaye fanboy trolls...just those who may read her or their ill informed totally false claims and not know the actual truth about a "true" bass legend...James Jamerson who deserves ALL the credit for his brilliant timeless work.
