Interviewing Bassists Stories Pt. 3

I think she's grieving and possibly depressed. I suggest looking into some mental health treatment.

Hope she feels better. :)
'Tis a roller coaster. She was raised to never "complain," so she won't tell the doctors when she's in pain. She also never ate three meals a day. Her recovery depends on it. Demanding that she do so is "criticism."

What Dad did was force us to choose which parent save, and what Mom is doing is forcing us to choose between her and us. Once was enough. She wants to come home and play her not-gonna-eat games in front of us, so we can lose another decade off our lives.

We don't think we're obligated to let both parents kill themselves in front of us, so when she comes home, she gets a week of games, and then it's back into the nursing home and from there the hospice and then the casket.

Tim and I are good sons. We gave it our all. Both parents wanted to live but on fantasy terms. Explaining to them that they needed chemo, food, sleep, etc., made them angry, because were were "criticizing" them.

But I have Stephen Crane to guide me.

Once I saw mountains angry,
And ranged in battle-front.
Against them stood a little man;
Ay, he was no bigger than my finger.
I laughed, and spoke to one near me,
"Will he prevail?"
"Surely," replied this other;
"His grandfathers beat them many times."
Then did I see much virtue in grandfathers--
At least, for the little man
Who stood against the mountains.

Depends on what you perceive see as "mountains".

Depends on what you perceive see as "mountains".
For me, it's all been mountains.

--Friedrich Nietzsche

"What kills you makes you strongest of all."

--Ernst Jünger

Your new Scott Thunes interview is fantastic Tom!
Thank heavens for digital mags such as Bass Musician Magazine, as I could never see a printed mag giving you that many pages.
As someone who has thumbed through the original 'In Cold Sweat..' Thunes interview many times over the years, it really is amazing to have a kinda update to it with both of you having the benefit of both hindsight and further life experience. Bravo! (plus you got him to tell us about his bass gear! Woohoo! ;))

Loving the new website by the way, checking it out all the time. Great stuff!

Thanks very much. The magazine asked if I wanted to do an interview, and Scott was the logical choice.

It was a great way to finally put so much rest in a very positive way.

I'm glad you like the Website. We're still tinkering with it. No Web designers in the US use English speaking programmers, so it's an adventure.

I plan to keep adding to it indefinitely.

Tom,

My most sincere condolences on the Link Removed. I wish you all the best in dealing with your loss, although you've made it abundantly clear in your writing that you're already doing that.

On a related note... I've been reading the Link Removed quite regularly these days. I won't go into detail about how your writings affect me personally, the ways that they have sustained or bothered me, or how I agree/disagree with your ideas and worldview, but I can say with certainty that you have succeeded spectacularly in one big way - I am always entertained. I hope you can keep it up.

Hi, Yools:

Thanks very much. Mom's passing was very peaceful. The term "cardiac arrest" sounds awful, but the attending physician said that all her machines simply flatlined, and there was no change in her expression and no reaction in her body. Her soul simply left.

Don't worry about agreeing or disagreeing. There's no "right way" to interpret what I write. However you feel about it is the right way.

I'm in the middle of trying to make my Website visible on search engines. I was utterly and thoroughly ripped off yet again (five times now), but my publicists say that they can maximize search-engine optimization. It's take three months, but at least it can be done.

Later today or tomorrow I'm going to write a post about exactly what you said. It'll be called something like, "Stop talking in declaratives." I'll link to three articles I've read recently that say "There are no soul mates," "People with goals always fail," and "Wearing makeup is wrong."

My viewpoint is that whatever works for you is right. There's no such thing as one size fits all, except for the ground we're all destined to end up in. However you interpret my writing is right. If you disagree with everything 100 percent, that's the right response.

So don't worry. All is well.

And thanks for you kind words. If you want to comment specifically on something I've written, go ahead. That's fine.

I agree completely, and am not at all worried.

Quite an appropriate and timely comment. Just last night at the bar I ended up chatting with a complete stranger who, it turns out, has ideas and a viewpoint about theology and spirituality that are completely at odds with mine. We got into a spirited debate about the nature of God and organized religions, and - surprise surprise! - we both had a wonderful time, thoroughly enjoyed each others company, and shook hands and wished each other the best until our next meeting. He didn't change my mind and I'm sure his did not change, but that wasn't - and shouldn't be - the point. I agree completely that one size does not fit all, and it was really nice to meet someone else who realizes that. Unfortunately, those types seem to be few and far between.

If you want to comment specifically on something I've written, go ahead. That's fine.

If I ever feel that I have something to contribute, I certainly will. I tend to keep quiet unless I believe that I can add value to the discussion, and that usually doesn't happen.

Thanks again for everything.
