I second that amen.
And I think that hearing loss is totally on topic in this thread because many or most of us are using headphones while recording. I take it easy on the volume but still - a half hour with the cans on and I feel the stress that has been placed on the fragile hearing mechanism.
Preach it to no end. I do and I know most people ignore the advice. But even if one person gets it the effort is worth it.
Three of my current and previous band mates have tinnitus. The son of one of them plays music too, and is aiming for a professional carreer. None use hearing protection, none draw the obvious conclusion from the tinnitus, the father doesn't push his son into getting good ear plugs, according to the son it is not discussed in music school. I don't get it, I would have thought they would preach this in school, and I would have expected to not pass the problem on to the next generation.
So, I might have a chance to do some jamming using my massive iPad rig and
I was thinking that in order to have electrical harmony among the various devices
I'd grab one of these little gizmos to sort out the signal routing.
Radial Engineering PRO AV2
I can take the 3.5mm stereo out from my Guitar Jack 2, run that into the AV2 and then go to the PA from that.
I also can take a monitor feed for a stage amp/monitor from the AV2 as the discrete inputs are paralleled with the 3.5mm stereo in.
Anybody use one of these? Something similar?
Am I overcomplicating things?

Well, this little gem came in the mail today and I gotta say it was worth the US$169.
I've only plugged in bass > Guitar Jack 2 > iPad > Guitar Jack 2 > ProAV2 > DT77os and the improvement in fidelity is quite audible.
JamUp tonez are more full and articulate without being noticeably louder
which is good because my worn out ears don't do loud very well any more either...
All and all the Radial ProAV2 seems to be a worthwhile expenditure for the developing iPad rig.
The sound is happening. Stands and cases are next...
Then comes recording.
That just looks like one of those things that feels right in the hand, a solid chunk of metal and good function.
That's a guy thing I think, women don't seem to get the same feeling.

I don't get it either, man.
I go to live shows and see people standing directly in front of a 1000 watt PA speaker. I see guys running wood chippers at screaming dB levels and I give them hearing protection (I carry little cellophane wrapped foam plugs almost everywhere I go) and they tell me: "Oh, yeah - we have those in the truck!"
I'm at my neighbors house and the four year old is shrieking at the top of his lungs directly into the baby's ear and the parents think it is okay.
I remember when I became SPL conscious. Mid 1980's at an AC/DC concert. I said to myself that this has got to be dangerous - and I put my fingers in my ears for 2 hours.
I tell everyone that will listen to use hearing protection when mowing the lawn, using the leaf blower, blowing the sno blower, running the chainsaw, running the VACUUM, blasting their shotgun (actually, the shotgun guys totally get it)
And here I am pushing 50 hearing things that my teenage nieces can't hear.
[by the way, one of my neighbors finally started using hearing protection while mowing his lawn. He found out he has hearing loss.]

On the volume thing. A friend brought me to a Cannibal Corpse show in NYC. I stood way off to the side with ear plugs. I walked out towards the center of the auditorium to get to the bar. I could not believe how loud it was! The sound pressure could be felt against your skin it was so brutally loud. I would say about 80 percent or better of musicians and others involved in live sound just have no regard for their hearing or that of the audience.
Good point on keeping headphone volume at a safe level. Remember how loud those original Walkmans could get! Jeez I'm surprised I don't have more problems than just some loss of high end sound.

And awesome stuff all the way around in there. It's actually gotten me to thinking about getting FL Studio HD and replacing my Garageband and Amplitube installs with that, seeing as I get these brilliantly deep tones I used to get with Amplitube out of JamUp now, and if I get FLStudio HD, I won't need Amplitube for recording any more, because FL has all the compression, EQ and master sends that Amplitube does and more. Anyone used FL Studio HD?
