That may be. However, the main reason I got the IO Dock is for MIDI. I use MIDI to change patches on Jamup with a foot pedal. I don't see another way to change patches live without MIDI.
If all you need is an I/O box, that looks like a stunning solution. I'm sure it's going to do very well, as Line 6 has been making some pretty darn good stuff.
That was why I got the IO Dock but I bought it early and had to wait for the iPad 3 adapter and even then it was still a faff to get it in there. Part of me wishes I'd kept it but it's not an elegant solution and it leads to more inelegant solutions, I ran a FCB1010 midi controller on mine and it's all a bit blergh
Between the size, power supply, faff of the adaptor it isn't the super portable solution I want.
My next step as I said before is the iRig Blueboard hopefully that will tick all the boxes, if not my back up plan is the new Apogee Duet and a Softstep midi controller, but the rig will have to be working pretty damn well before I drop that much cash on IO and control
As others said if you import an external mp3 into an app that can play along, you can adjust the volume of that individual mp3 within the app.
If you are trying to use the music app (iTunes) in iOS to play the mp3 that app will be louder and will also take over hardware volume so you are kind of stuck.
I'm hoping that iOS 7 or later will provide a solution so the mobile devices operate more like OS/X where the current apps that take over hardware volume can be detached if needed. We will see.
Since I have a small mixer I solved it by just plugging an iPod into the mixer, and then I can also turn off the bass track on split recordings.
Oh another benefit of the Line 6 is that 1/8th in, I can have my iphone in my rig as well as like a kaoss pad, while the ipad is doing drums, rig and fx.

How long is the Sonic Port to iOS device cable?
I am sure it sounds better than iRig or the other headphone jack devices, but have you used any 30-pin/lightning/USB based devices to compare sound-quality wise? Thanks!
I can confirm it does work with amplitube so that guy must have been on crack or IK fixed it but it does work

The only other unit I've owned is the alesis io dock, this sounds better and the fx react better.
I've had my jam now so I'll post some more in depth feedback shortly.
But there is no cross talk between the IO, no odd hum or need to run a noise gate all the time.
I hear ya, man. I've got the iPad 4, so I have to go to a 30-pin adapter to Lightning, then I'm splicing into an extension so I can add another 8', and that's just to get from the iPad from the mic stand (I use it for lyrics) to the soft 2U bag.
Ultra-portable? Not really. But... It's a lot lighter then my rack gear, and all my cables, midi pedals (I'm thinking about having 2 smaller foot pedals not a big one) instrument cables, and the whole deal fits into the rack case. I still only have 2 things: the 2U case and the bass, and that ain't bad.
Even with all cable making and such, I'm still a big fan of the iOS rig. However, I do have questions:
- Anyone have an idea what the max length for Apple cables is before signal degradation?
- Can you go from iPad/Phone to USB, then back too Apple cables and still use the IO Dock? 30-pin -> USB -> 30-pin? If I had to guess, I'd say probably not. I can't believe all the things the IO Dock wants to see from the Apple device will pass though USB cable data stream. I hope I'm wrong. Anyone tried it?
I know most everyone here is deep into the Jamup app or AT or AK but anyone that has a Mac should seriously check out the new version of MainStage ( v.3.0 ) They finally added a Bass Amp Designer and it's pretty f'ing awesome IMO. The effects and sounds benefit from the power of the Mac's processor and with the right interface, I guess you can still use all the other iOS apps that make so much sense on a touch screen. For $30 you get boatloads of studio quality amps/pedals/instruments and plugins and the processing power to run them all... I was messing around today with Jamup for a while and then went over to MainStage and the difference is pretty noticeable. Love Jamup, don't get me wrong, but for me something about my bass through the iPhone to PA has just left me feeling not completely ready to ditch my bass rig.. MainStage is starting to give me that feeling.
Awesome I was considering the sonic port but that was gonna be a deal breaker. I use all the apps.
I currently use the irigHD unit into an iPad4 and have the Line 6 unit on its way to me, it should be here in few days. I will be comparing both and keeping the one I like better, hardware wise the Line 6 has more of what I am after(ins/outs etc) so if the sound is the same then it will get the nod.
I've never used the old irig unit before so I can't compare the new and old to each other but for my purpose of practicing and rehearsals the irigHD it works great.
Yes it does. It worked that way starting with V. 2.0. I don't have logic but people that use both say it comes with all the sounds logic used to have. Plus there is another 20GB of content that you can download once MainStage is installed.
The old iRig plugged into the headphone jack. Like, the headphone jack was the input. It was super noisy.
I haven't used the iRig HD but since it plugs into the 30-pin/lightning connector I would guess it should be at least in the same ballpark as the Jam and Sonic Port..
I also just ordered the Sonic Port because of the extra I/O options and will A/B with the Jam.
Just saw this video on the LINE6 sonic port....
towards he end the reviewer states that it works with the native line6 app of course and works with jamup and ampkit but in amplitube the setup screen says that the interface in not supported.
hopefully this is something IK addresses in a future update.

Cool I'll stick with Garageband then, so many nice looking recording apps available can all get very confusing.
