The Taurus Feces clause must be invoked on Apple. If you go and buy the JamUp XT upgrade, why is that considered a new program? Why would you lose your already paid for purchases? Why isn't the user notified of such crappy scheme at the time of purchase?

You know, I was already old when cell phones came into the scene... no, none of this stuff is absolutely necessary, and if the market realized that and acted accordingly these things wouldn't happen. The reason they happen is because in spite of us getting screwed we keep going back for more...

Right.
It seems then, that paid versions are different programs - if you have to download/install the 'whole' thing, as opposed to unlocking add-ons via in-app purchases(?). An upgrade to a/the paid version via an in-app purchase would take care of this. But both Apple and Positive Grid and any other app developer that makes upgrades different programs are all too aware of how this works, and gain from our double purchasing of in-app additions. I'll continue to use JamUp though (see last sentence quoted above) but even if I didn't, either way my money is spent: win-win for Apple and developers.

It's the lack of notice/communication--the principle--that bothers me, in this case. Should I/we be surprised? No. This isn't rocket science but it doesn't make it right. ;)

Transferring purchases is done via Apple/iTunes/iStore so it's all linked to Apple. This is their intention: to be able to use that 'same' program across devices (and the in-app purchases of that 'same' program as well). This I like, as opposed to calling an iPad version different than the iPhone version and requiring users to buy both (if the two versions truly are different, then that's another story).

Indeed, it seems reasonable to believe that you would be able to transfer those in-app purchases to the full version of the same application, after you get a good tease and want to spend more money. Nope.

That's wut I wuz gonna say. First time I used garage band I had some crazy latency happening, and got pissed thinking I had just wasted $600 + on the ipad and other stuff I bought with it. Turned out I just had to close the other apps that were running. iPad took a little getting used to for me. Still getting used to it actually.

I restarted everything and made sure everything was shut down. It's not as noticeable with finger style, but if I play slap/popped octaves with the strings muted with my left hand I can hear the physical thump/snap of my thumb hitting the string or the pop of the string right before I hear the note through the headphones. I can live with it with finger style, but it's too noticeable when slapping. Then again, when do I really slap?

The original mastery of the Apple approach, was that your account was with Apple through iTunes, rather than with the software vendor. That enabled them to vet all applications for compatibility, etc., and also to pressure developers to stick to their intended low price-per-unit marketing model.

It worked really well for a while, and the massive price advantage helped to grease the skids for competitors that tried to use PC software pricing as a model for phone apps.

Unfortunately the whole thing has gone off the rails lately.

I blame the gaming community- they are eating up games that suck users in with a "free" app, and then snooker them with in-app purchases after they're already hooked. Some of my younger daughter's friends are getting themselves in real trouble, spending as much as $100 a month on in-app gaming purchases.

I don't know if Apple has a new business model post-Steve Jobs, or if their hands are tied in some way because of vendor contracts. Regardless, if they don't watch it, they're going to squander their market advantage.

Why not buy the full program, and do your in-app purchases from within the paid version.

The model that's been established in this group (purchase pedals and amps, but run them in the free version) probably isn't really what the developers had in mind.

I suspect the free version is just intended to be a test drive. If you like it enough to want to start making in-app purchases, why not throw the developer a bone, and buy the app?

Well, to be blunt, this particular group is mostly bass players and purchasing the full version would get me a whole lot of stuff I don't want and then I have to purchase the stuff I do. And not for nothing but the companies probably prefer you buy separately because that user will pay more in the long run if they keep purchasing. I plunked down $10 for the bass package just for the fact theat they actually HAD A BASS PACKAGE. Since then I have purchased at least $10 with worth of other stuff and I will certainly purchase the second bass expansion pack. I think the Free versions of these apps are there for specifically the type of user that I am. I'm a bassplayer and don't care much about guitar specific gear and I would never have gotten any of these apps if they forced me to buy $20 worth of guitar crap I had no interest in just so I could purchase some bass gear. Positive Grid has the ideal set up in place with expansion packs and I will purchase every single Bass Expansion pack they offer and then pick and choose a few other things if I feel the need.

Absolute newbie here, need advice. I’m really attracted to going the ipad route as an overall digital music platform (charts, demo recording, practicing, drum machine apps, looper etc.) because my impression is that getting all this stuff to work is a bit easier and more seamless than trying to configure same on a PC laptop. Mac laptops get a little pricey for my budget, so the IPad looks perfect. MY recording needs are simple, I think Garageband or maybe Auria would be more than adequate.

My threshold questions revolve around which iPad to purchase. 2nd Generation vs. 3rd Generation? Advantages/shortcomings b/t 16 Mb, 32 Mb and 64 Mb? Wait until later in the spring and get the new release? I’m also very attracted to the apparent functionality of the Alesis ioDock – but have seen disclaimers that the latest iPads don’t work with this device. Any info on whether Alesis plans to remedy this or are you stuck buying an older iPad model if you want to use the Alesis? Any similar options to the Alesis that will work with newer iPad versions?

Thanks for your help and patience with what are likely very rudimentary questions.

The latest iPad is actually the 4th Generation. It was quietly released. Basically it's a 3rd gen with a faster processor and the lightning connector. The new connector is going to make compatibility with docks / devices difficult. So think about what you want to hook up to.

Personally I just use the iPad for sheet music and playing MP3s through an outboard headphone amp. I'm using a 3rd gen 32GB with GSM/LTE so that I can download music anywhere I go as long as there is cellular service. That was expensive. I'd probably just get a 16GB wifi model if I had it to do over again.

Thanks - so is the faster processor in the 4th Gen critical for certain apps or a significant improvement in performance, or would I be okay with the 3rd Gen slower processor (and its non-lightning connectivity). Also, what are your thoughts on the 16/32/64 choice - the device doesn't look like it was designed to store a lot of data anyway, so are there other reasons to consider between those oiptions?

That's a sweet deal, but I have my suspicions regarding the price drop on the iO Dock. I've a feeling NAMM is going to unleash at least a few new ipad docks and stations. At least I'm hoping so, and holding out just a wee bit longer. While I'm incredibly tempted to pull the trigger on that sale, I'm gonna hold out just a wee bit longer.
