Iowa Bassists! Assemble!

Lots of friendly people. Low crime rates. Basically all small towns. Good schools. Relatively low cost of living. Strong communities.

Small towns falls on the cons as well. We don't get the cutting edge stuff until a few months after the coasts at times. Not much original live music outside of Des Moines and Iowa City.

There's a short list.

I'd look at Des Moines or the Cedar Rapids/Iowa City corridor. Both are good "life quality" communities. Less people, less traffic, and your dollar goes farther in terms of housing.

Finding a good job isn't necessarily easy, though, because, generally, a) people who get them don't leave them and b) the smaller population size means there's less demand or opportunity in many fields.

I'll step up for a number. Hitting the lows for our praise and worship team at Faith Bible Church in Panora!

Yeah man! Welcome.
I also play in my church a few times a week.
Doing so is truly a reoccurring highlight for me.

I'm coming from South Florida. Looking for simple, polite folks.

What kind of population size are you looking for?
Sioux City is a decently large city for the Mid-West.

(I'd also suggest you look at Sioux Falls, SD...but don't tell the others on this thread that I said that.)

Musically there's a lot going on in Cedar Rapids. Lots of blues, jazz, rock and acoustic gigs. ALWAYS somethin' goin' on down town. As far as retail...not much except the local West Music and Guitar Center. Plenty of fresh air, good food and great people. Gas is currently $2.87/gal.......much lower than most metropolitan areas.

Both Ceder Rapids and Des Moines are actually nice cities. As stated before, DM is just bigger. One town that is missing on that map is Spencer. It has a decent job market. And it's only 15 minutes south of Lake Okoboji. However, the music scene isn't as hot there as it is in CR or DM. And last note is the Ceder Falls/Waterloo area is probably one of my favorite areas in the state.

Thanks!

Hi guys I just relocated to Ankeny. What is music scene like in DM metro and Central Iowa in general?

Also can anyone recommend a bass tech for set ups and stuff? I came from South Florida, so probably due for an adjustment........

Also a music store other than guitar center that a bass player would enjoy.

We relocated due to wife's promotion, so I'm still looking for work, but it seems ok so far.

Friends of mine in Des Moines say The Lutherie Shop is excellent. Another friend of mine took an acoustic guitar out there and said the work was great but didn't like their attitude so YMMV. http://thelutherieshop.com/
