Is Deep Purple in the same league with Led Zeppelin?

They way I see the question is first, you have to establish what puts Led Zeppelin into the league that they are in? Then, look at Deep Purple and see if they posses those attributes and requirements? When I did that, it was clear that they certainly had some, but lacked some very significant others.. the ones that actually set Zeppelin apart from almost all the rest of the world class rock bands.
For me, Deep Purple is lightyears ahead of Zep. Not even close.
MK II Deep Purple is all I care about though. Roger Glover is one of the most underrated bass players ever.

I remember that, too. In my brother's stack of vinyl. The title track Stratus was great and Quadrant 4, if I remember?? Also, Snoopy's Revenge.. I could be wrong... that was 35, 45 years ago..
Yeah but they are full songs and they always credited the original artist unlike Zep who blatantly stole riffs and lyrics and never gave credit to the original artists. It is no wonder why Zep were in and out if Court for their Plagiarism. Purple are far more original and not a cover band like Zep!
It's true they used some traditional blues licks in a handful of songs. That's very common in the blues. Page was heavily influenced by Willie Dixon and should have credited him with a few songs when he released them with Zeppelin. I don't like that kind of bs either. They are crediting him now, though. The intro to Staiway is similar to another song. But, zeppelin won that case and it is over. A lot of songs stem from other songs especially in the blues. So, "similar" is par for the course in music... the blues, more so than most genres.
In the day, both were "my bands"...loved both then & love both, still.
Learned mucho from both.
Burn was the last DP album I bought (March '74) until recently. Eventually, picked up their back catalog (Mk I) & Stormbringer. Within the past couple years, I broke down & bought the Bob Ezrin/Steve Morse albums.
In the day, Led Zep's HOTH was the last one I bought until I got the rest, like, 20 years later. I cut my teeth trying to play/learn their 1st 5 albums.
Learned mucho from both.

I don’t really think Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple are in the same category. They were a huge influence on bands like Rush, Heart, Van Halen, but that doesn’t mean they are the same band.
Whitesnake began life as a Deep Purple spinoff, and they have more in common with Deep Purple as a result.

Yet the self-titled ‘87 album, the one more people know about than the early stuff, is drenched in Zeppelinisms…
“Sweet Child” came out in 1970. “Stairway” was released at the end of 1971, but recorded much earlier in the year. That said, I liked “SCIT” better when it was known as “Bombay Calling”, from 1969…
