Is Dream Theater still relevant?

I shall answer this question with another question..."who the hell is Dream Theater?" Nuff said.

Like, 10 million records sold, 15 world tours, and just landed #6 on the Billboard 200. No idea who they are either.

Dream Theater are okay still, it's just since they've moved to Roadrunner and had that god awful singer from Slipknot guest on the album they have gone downhill.

What in the world are you talking about...Slipknot singer?

This IMO is very true. But one thing about Crue and other less technical bands do IMO have something in their music that DT usually lacks. Feelings. JPs solos ...

I'd say Dream Theater is relevant, but I find it hard to find many people who enjoy their music. I enjoy it, even the heavier stuff, just because it usually interests me with its complexity and whatnot...

I do agree with John Myung becoming kind've watered down in recent albums...which is why I listen more to the newer songs for the overall sound instead of just hearing Myung. But I do think he should stand out a bit more.

Personally, I can't stand Dream Theater anymore, their last good album was Octavarium, and that was still the start of, in my opinion, crap records. They are just shred basically now. That's boring. The singer's voice has alwasy pissed me off to lol

I have, and quite possibly will always find Dream Theater "relevant." What people may find "underwhelming" or "unimpressive" does not translate to "irrelevant" for Dream Theater. It simply marks a new step in how they approach their music. I could care less if you liked the newest album, it's just wrong to assume that they're being more of the same-old, same-old, because clearly, they're not. Have you ever heard that gothic feel to the songs as you have in A Nightmare to Remember? I know I haven't. No other band I know has been able to maintain its consistent feel AND venture into other genres. From Through Her Eyes to Panic Attack to Home and A Nightmare to Remember, Dream Theater still clearly shines through while exploring other aspects of music. This might be a phase in my rough-and-tumble teenage life, but I'm going to defend it to hell as long as it lasts.

Dream Theater is evidence to me that technical proficiency does not equal good music. In my opinion they are no more musical than a police siren. Many people I know find them so exciting and interesting but I honestly couldn't be more bored, it doesn't sound heartfelt, it just sounds like a wash of noise to me, and keep in mind this is coming from someone who enjoys noise.

I also felt the need to make mention that Jordan Rudess probably owns hundreds of synthesizers and keyboards but always manages to sound corny.

That`s exactly how I feel about them as well. To me, songs based around a guitarist and keyboardist having constant solo duels while the singer belts mundane vocal lines over a drummer playing poly rhythms is utter crap no matter how technically efficient the players may be. I can respect them for what they do, but I`d much rather listen to AC/DC`s three chords of terror over and over again than listen to DT`s smorgasbord of musical nonsense... This too, coming from a guy who likes some weird music.

yeah, i agree with this... they've lost their "listenability", if they ever had it in the first place :smug: i think they're AMZAING. but, there's a point where you gotta stop and re-evaluate whether or not you're actually listening to music. there are bands out there like thought chamber, meshuggah, and Spastic Ink that are even crazier than DT. but from DT onward, you lose the repetition of motives and other melodic devices that make music so memorable. look at Circus Maximus, or Vanden Plas. these bands have much more listenability then DT does now-a-days. the days of shred are, IMO, coming to a close.

Dude, i used to be EXACTLY like you. nobody could tell me that DT weren't good anymore. but you know, it happens to just about EVERY band on the face of the earth. they get big, they reach an apex of popularity and creative energy, then they... go the same way that Metallica went in the 90's... lol. i think there is MUCH better Prog though out there right now. check out:
Opeth
Porcupine Tree
Blackfield
Protest the Hero
Rush
Yes
Genesis
King Crimson
Pink Floyd
Tool
Pain of Salvation
Puscifer
The Mars Volta

i think all of these bands are just as talented, if not more so, than DT. although, DT is QUITE talented in it's own right.

DT are relevant to me. I mean, as a band they influence me in every way to become a better musician. I first listened to there music and thought to myself D: what the hell?!.. then i started to listen closer and start to learn things that help me understand them musically. This has made me become a better bassist.

I haven't got the new album yet. I would love to buy it and listen, my friends enjoy it, and say it's worth a listen, and then other people flame it, which is fair enough. I just think that every band should musically progress and experiment, after all, putting out the same stuff year in, year out is boring as hell. As for there past albums, i love them all. I can't really fault them as i think they each have an aspect that stands out. LaBrie can deliver vocals (sometimes) that are well worth listening too, but sometimes live he sounds.. flat.

Overall, these are my favourite band. They just play music for what it is and cover many aspects of it, and i love that :D but this is opinion =P

Peace xox

I'm fans of some of those guys, but for me, DT just satisfies every need I have. DT is one of the reasons why I started writing more adventurous bass lines. Plus, there's always a DT song for any mood.

...Bahahahahahaha, if you think Dream Theater is musical nonsense, bands like these would further thwart those limits.
