Is It Really Too Much to Ask?

You have a point...BUT I never ever buy an instrument with the idea of selling it.
To me that never ever enters my mind.

To me its a tool...Maybe a tool I love, but a tool none the less.

Questions I just saw that you own 6 Fenders (I mean this in a non-judgment way) are you collector and seller were resale means something? Or more of a player that needs tools? (Again this could be read insulting and that is not my intent...Just curious) since my mind does not ever consider such things...I only usually sell my high end stuff if I don't bond with it or my daughters instruments.
Just curious... is it wrong for me to buy inexpensive basses... (that I do play) just because I liked the particular knobs on that bass... or because I didn't have one in that color? I wouldn't call myself a collector... that would be like calling someone that "collects" 1999 pennies. However... I never buy something that would be considered a bad investment... in otherwords I don't believe in overpaying for things. Similar to the OP. It just seems he wants to buy something that's easily mad by fender without having to pay through the nose.

No...
My original comment was that you could get warmoth with those specs that the OP wanted...
PS you can build a warmoth 4 string for less then the price of a MIA 4 string Fender.

There are a lot of letters in the alphabet. P and J are only two of them....
but V basses are too uncomfortable to play... and they look really funny on old dudes like me.

Dear Fender,

I would like a 3 color burst "P" (without a damn J pick-up coming along for the ride) Bass - with a Jazz Neck!!

Is that really too much to ask?

This...but with a "Jazz" width nut (Bound and Blocked would be nice)

Seriously Every Fender I own has been modified by me because they don't make what I want....I have never been able to buy an "off the shelf" Fender that I didn't have to modify
Brand new. Exactly what I wanted, except....I don't do Chinese Squiers.

Why don't you check out G&L? They have way more options than Fender, and either an LB-100 or SB-1 gives you an off-the-shelf Pbass that needs no mods.

I think Fender doesn't offer this the exact way you want it intentionally. Definitely not because there isn't a demand. I believe its because they use a handful of options that they know are desired to sell their various lines. Want a certain spec with this or that platform? Only offered on one or two specific lines.

Their offerings are not random. They are carefully constructed to sell as many instruments as possible based on market research. Its the reason they dont have a G&L style menu of options to choose from.

For the record, Im with you.

^This exactly.^
Let me share with you my playing experience. I learned to play guitar left handed. But I didn't flip the strings over so the low E is on bottom. So I have to do the following:
Buy a left handed bass
Buy a right handed nut
New set of strings
Discard a perfectly new set of strings
Install the nut
Change bridge height and length of each string
Shave down the replacement nut for the proper height of string above the first fret.
Change pickup height if necessary.

What do you think the chances are of me walking into a store and finding a bass I can take home and play off the shelf?

I'm not complaining, this is just a fact of life for me. Having said all this, it seems kind of silly to complain about switching out a neck that will perfectly fit in the body then putting four bolts back on.

I believe there are a lot of P-bass players out there that are doing exactly what the OP wants to have off the shelf. Given the number of positive responses to the question, I think there's a good point made here. But, if the OP refuses to take the 15 minutes to swap out a neck -- an exact Fender neck replacement, he should get over it and either go to a Music Man or Ernie Ball, or Sadowsky-- whatever company will offer a similar instrument. Or, go to Warmoth and design his own. Good luck to the OP whichever direction he takes.

<<<<I wanted a bass like this that I could afford, but as the song says: "you can't always get what you want, but if you try some time you just might find, you get what you need". So I say just build what you want. Either that, or call Fender and ask them why they don't make what you want. Maybe they will.

I'm kind of with the OP. For the money you spend on a stock fender, it would be nice not to have to go out and spend another 25-50% to make it what you want. Being a five string player - some fretless -it's way worse than those of you who just deal with the four stringers. First it's hard to find the Fender P 5 string used, so new is really the only option. They don't seem to be available in MIM or even the Squier line. So $1500 + for a MIA "low level" Fender P V as they offer it. In my case I'd like it in a fretless version (yes I know the "P" means frets, but I want the pups and the simple passive controls- why do I have to go out and drop another $500 for a new neck? It's actually pretty rude and probably the reasons I've been so resistant to Fender products.
Many seem to miss this simple point. Switching necks may be easy but does not come for free. Given that all parts are interchangeable it would be REALLY easy to just let you configure your bass, or sell different combinations, but hey, selling you the extra neck is extra profit
