the short answer is both...
I like most people buy better tools as my skill level increases...there are many different brands of tools out there of different composition...from time to time we try those tools to see if we like them...sometimes we do...and sometimes...we don't and those get sold off...but why buy an expensive custom tool knowing that down the road if you don't like it or need it anymore you can't give it away let alone sell it...
Over the 37+ plus years of serious playing...I have tried and bought, Fender, Lakland, B.C. Rich. Traben. G&L, Warwick, ESP/LTD, Gibson, Rickenbacker, Schecter, Dean, SX, Dingwall, Hondo, Aria, Electra Westone, Edwards, and probably a few others I am forgetting
The Bulk of what still remains is made up of Lakland and Fender all of which have Jazz width nuts and a combination of passive "P", "J", and P/J" pickups...the majority of which are also bound and blocked...It's what I like in terms of feel, sound, and aesthetics
