Is there such a thing as a considerate smoker?

In public, it's my personal policy smoke only in designated areas. When there isn't such an area near at hand, I ask the people around me if they're alright with me smoking around them, and proceed accordingly.

Fortunately I've not run into any non-smokers in "real life" as intolerant as I've seen populating this thread.

I haven't met many considerate non-smokers.

Rights and political correctness have taken over everything. It's all a sham anymore, all about control and money. The Surgeon General sits on the VIP Board of the biggest anti-smoking pharmaceutical company in the world. They've only made billions as well in the market by publishing propaganda. It's all about money.

I love Mark Twain's thoughts on smoking myself. At least it isn't a bunch of twisted meta-analysis.

I would have to say I have run across at least 10x as many inconsiderate non-smokers as inconsiderate smokers.

Do you guys consider it inconsiderate to drive a vehicle where people are breathing? Those fumes are just as toxic. and 10/1 you are all guilty.
This!
I am a smoker and I try my hardest to not affect anyone with my smoking. I have not smoked in my house since the day my wife became pregnant, 10 years ago. I have stood out in the freezing rain (Wondered to myself why the heck I do this) and will not smoke in a vehicle, unless the others are smokers to. I use the public ashtrays that we have in the city and keep a empty pop can in my truck, just to ensure that I don't toss my butts out the window. In a nut shell, I try.
But what really gets me going are the self rightious types who give me a dirty look while I am standing at an intersection, with traffic lines up in both directions, a diesel bus idling away and they think my smoke is going to cause them grief!
What about all of us smokers who take it outside at a gathering, only to have the non smokers come out to our "smoking area" and then complain about the smoke! Really! We left you all so we could smoke and not bother anyone else, yet you insist on standing with us and then complain... to words... BITE ME!

While smoking may be a nuisance and of course you have to deal with the person still smelling of smoke even when they're not doing it around you, that most smokers I know anyway will go out of their way not directly inconvenience anyone, and that's considerate IMO.

What's inconsiderate is a bunch of non-smoker's ruining businesses by forcing all bars and eating establishments to be non-smoking. They own the business they should make their own decision with what they do. Don't like it, go somewhere else that agrees with your tastes more.

I am a considerate smoker, but I am tired of all the inconsiderate, ill-informed, propaganda pushing non-smokers. (Not all of them, but a much higher percentage in my opinion than inconsiderate smokers).

My city has had a smoking ban for a couple of years now, and I have to say that it is really nice not having to immediately strip down and take a shower and do a load of laundry after going to a bar.
Unfortunately, many of the surrounding suburbs still allow smoking. That has kept me from going out to jams on several occasions because I just didn't want to deal with the stink when I got home.
My gear smells better too.

I'm a considerate smoker. I do not smoke indoors, even if I'm in a smoker's house and he invites me to. I do not smoke in cars, ever. I avoid smoking on watercraft whenever possible and if I have to, do it on deck on the downwind side.

I do not smoke near building entrances, even in pouring rain. I do not borrow umbrellas to smoke under. I smoke premium cigarettes so that the smoke does not cling to my clothing to the same degree that cheap smokes do. I use a mint, gum, or drink some sort of beverage with every cigarette to reduce the smell of smoke on my breath. I use ashtrays and butt bins whenever they are available.

I avoid tossing butts on sidewalks or lawns whenever possible. I bury my butts when I'm in the wilderness. I do not ever smoke in bus shelters unless I am deep in the boonies and totally alone. I use a reusable lighter (zippo) to minimize the trash from my habit. I do not ever toss empty packs anywhere except in the garbage.

I only ever smoke in my house when I'm recording, and only when I happen to be living alone (i.e. no roommate). I do not smoke within 30 feet of building entrances except in passing, like when I'm downtown and the only alternative is to walk down the center of the street. I blow my smoke away from my companions, regardless of whether they smoke or not. When I'm with people I don't know, I always ask if they mind me lighting up, and always abide by their preferences, and never make them feel guilty for it.

I always offer a smoke to people I don't know, always give smokes to anyone who asks, and always bum a light.

Perhaps the best of all, though: I'm working on quitting, have been for several years, but am not giving up. Currently I'm using a nicotine inhaler and have managed to cut smoking entirely except at work, where I can't quite quit due to the pressures and routines of the work that I do. I'm still trying, though.

You could try Vaping as an alternative as well.
However, I do disagree with "burying" the butts when in the wild. But that's just me being very nit-picky at that point I suppose.

I've considered vaping, but I don't personally think the cost/benefit works out for me. The nicorette inhalers are a lot like vaping, in that there's no burning and no smoke, but the inhalers are also a lot cheaper, don't require batteries, and refill cartridges can be purchased from any drugstore, as opposed to having to be ordered online.

As for burying, I ask you in complete earnestness, what's a better idea? I bury them so that various small animals don't try to eat them. I could pack them out, yes, but I've actually been told by a couple of park rangers that it's not a good idea, due to the possibility of my trash bag igniting in my backpack. (I do a lot of multi-day hiking trips - not a lot of garbage cans or ashtrays available.)

Seriously, if you have a better alternative, please do let me know!

Couple of options from an ex-smoker who had to deal with that: (1) roll your own (which are completely biodegradable), (2) Altoids tin + rubber band to hold the lid shut, or small metal screwtop jar. I used to use the Altoids tin method at Burning Man, which is a 100% pack-it-out event.

I doubt that there's been any even marginally significant ruination of businesses caused by regulations that remove tobacco smoke from the general business space.

Smoking has been banned in pubs and restaurants for several years now in Ontario. While there was an initial outcry, there hasn't been a peep about loss of business. Bars are still packed, and everything is the same, except smokers smoke outside/on the patio/in smoking rooms and you can actually breathe indoors. The difference is spectacular.
