It does come down to personality, I think. Are you the one defining the sunglasses, or are the sunglasses defining you? If it's the former, you can get away with almost anything.

Technically speaking, that applies to the bass guitar as well, I suppose.

Opinions are like asses ... everybody's got one ... so i use the sunglasses if i see too many lights on stage, i also can see my fretboard without being notice by audience while i am doing it, and when the pics are taken you always look good! no douchey involve.

If you are just wearing something to put on airs though or trying to look cool, expect some people to see through you and mock you for it. Rightfully.

Maybe opinion has changed over the years...... Why throw a television out of a hotel window? You can't then watch it and you will have to pay for it. So instead lets just sit down and watch tv ....how boring.

Sunglasses after dark is a statement... It's sort of glam rock...tongue in cheek... A bit of fun.... Makes life a bit more interesting ...why not?

I think people are missing the point of why someone might want to do this.

It's a bit of a square society that would want to ridicule this ......of course you have to look cool ....if you can't pull it off then don't bother.

When I was in the Corps, one of the brothers in my squad bay would wear shades when he was going out on liberty at night. I asked him one night why and he replied...

"Brother, I am so cool the sun shines round me all the time."

And he was right.

I sometimes wear them on stage but only if I've got a blast of bright white light right in my face. A constant barrage of that will split my head open in about 10 minutes so I do it more to avoid the headache than to try to look/be cool.

My point is if you're playing for more than a small group of friends and you don't have the swagger to pull off sunglasses, somebody in the crowd is laughing at you for being "that guy". I'll never tell somebody they can't wear them, but unless you're a bonafide rock star, somebody is having a laugh at your expense. That's just a fact, and I figured the OP should know. It's up to him whether he's okay with that.

Also if you're playing blues it's just part of the uniform.

I don't even wear sunglasses when I play...I think it is douchbaggery to place yourself as the judge of fashion.

At least sunglasses make it look as if you made an effort. What bugs me is people showing up to the gig looking as if they just rolled out of bed and threw on whatever was closest (granted, there are some musical styles/scenes where such a look is appropriate). You're on stage - put on a show.

I accidentally wore sunglasses during a gig 2 weeks ago. It was an outdoor gig that got moved inside and it was a lightly tinted Rx pair that I had been wearing all day. I didn't realize I had them on because I always wear glasses. Last weekend, I was the only guy in the band with out sunglasses during an indoor gig. Of course, they were all wearing them parked on top of their ball caps, which I didn't have either. Since it was a small town volunteer fireman's fundraiser shindig, I stuck out like a sore thumb.

Good response guy! I have had trouble with my eyes for a few years (autoimmune disease) and went through a short period where I had to wear shades at gigs. I felt like such a douche and yes, people are starring and thinking "this guy is a douche". And, you can only explain the situation so many times. Im on meds and can tough out bright lights better now.

So, let me answer the question with a question. "is david hasselhoff a douche?" Theres your answer.
