It looks like poor Carol Kaye doesn't understand the internet

Some one will definitely be thanking Carol.

Even if it were clear that she is going after actual wrongdoers, the fact remains that the RIAA (which has considerably more power and resources than poor Carol) has been going after copyright infringers for years and years, and file sharing is more popular than ever. Somehow I doubt that Carol's actions will be thanked by anyone but profiteering lawyers who won't tell her that she doesn't have a good case. If that argument doesn't move you, answer this question: who is thanking Metallica for their aggressive anti-Napster stance? Bonus question: was their stance even effective in the long run?

I wish Carol all the best, but that doesn't mean I have to hold any illusions about how this will turn out.

I find the hate and vitriol directed at Carol Kaye to be the most disturbing part of all. At least she wrote something SOMEONE is ripping off, which is undeniable. And since anyone who is anyone knows and respects her immense contributions to music, if you don't, well....... don't advertise your ignorance by putting her down.

The internet has changed the dynamics of recorded music and I doubt anyone such as Ms. Kaye is going to be able to turn back the clock. The business model has changed, she can't do anything about it and it must frustrate her that she can't do anything about it. Even the top record companies have stopped what was once their high-profile look for illegal downloaders.

The same will happen with the written word as soon as Kindle, etc take hold. Look what has happened to newspapers.

I fully understand what is going on.
No, I don't think so.
If you did you would be trying to get through to her that, in this instance, she's shooting at the wrong target, instead of sitting there rooting "Go Carol, Go"!

You're falling into her ignorance just because of your respect for her otherwise.

Like I said "Wrong target". She's blaming Dan Rather for the Kennedy assasination because CBS has file footage of it in their archives.

Lucky is the person who can play only songs that he likes. And for the record (hee hee -- a pun!), session players also "play live" and "perform."

Whether you like her playing or not, Carol Kaye plays well, plays live and realizes that you can sometimes play songs you don't like, play them well and be paid for it. That's called professionalism. (OK -- you can proceed now to accusing her of "selling out.")

Her failure to understand the Internet, 21st century technology -- or even the internal combustion engine -- says nothing about her talent and body of work.

You're like 6 pages behind. We've moved past talking about her work, now we're talking about coffee tables.

edit: Correction. We are no longer talking about coffee tables. We are now talking about the same thing we've been talking about, except now there is an insider who knows some stuff, and then other people say CK is still wrong, then the insider insists vaguely that CK is right, then the other people say that she's not.

I'd like to apply for the position of cliff-noting this thread for the lazy. I'll be resuming this role every 10 posts or so.

Some people have not stopped talking about her viability as a player, although that was never the initial issue. I'm happy to stop when they do.

Damn the fool who invented these Internet tubes anyway.

The written word will be around as long as batteries die. Or maybe we'll go back to oral histiry -- easier to revise when there's no proof of anything.

Rather was in Dallas 11/22/63. Look at those grassy knoll picks again.

No, that's what you may think you would do.

I'm not privy to JAUQO III-X's relationship with Carol, but I have had quite a few email exchanges with her in the past and I wouldn't dare try to tell her what to do.

Her contributions to music and bass have been documented already, but I don't think it has been mentioned her dedication to teaching and sharing what she knows. Her prices for lessons are very cheap and she is always willing to help anyone willing to learn. That also defines her relationship with most people though. She is the Master, and you are the student. She doesn't need someone to tell her about anything. If she is curious about something she has the resources to find out.

I have seen on her forum where she has zero tolerance for anyone knowing more about something than her or having a different opinion. But it is HER forum. She can run it how ever she wants. It is not TB where everyone is supposed to be open-minded and share ideas. The purpose of her forum is for her to teach you what she knows, and that does sometimes include her getting carried away about things she may not be as informed about as you. If you point that out, she will delete you. Sometimes, even if you don't point it out and just say something she disagrees with, she will delete you. But again it is her forum.

Yes, I understand torrents and filesharing. I understand the arguments that she is after the wrong person. But who knows, she may break some new ground in this area. The argument that for example, PirateBay, is only hosting links is going to fail eventually. Why? Because stealing is wrong and in Judeo-Christian society it has been wrong for 5000 years. She says on her forum that the guy was not just reporting, but was originally hosting a link to the download. I believe her. I have atleast shared emails with her. I have no reason to believe this guy.

It is her material, and someone helping move it illegally will one day be stopped. Yes they can filter Google too. Ask China.

The music business model is changing...so what. Stealing is still wrong.

I get so bored by the arrogant nerds who think because they know C++ and the Unix file system that they are so smart. Get a girlfriend.

The internet is changing too, my little buck-toothed, pocket protected, friends. Eventually, all of this filesharing will lead to regulations that will lock down the internet. I expect to one day need a license to get online, like you need one to drive a car on a real highway. No one stops the man for long. And when we don't have the freedom on the internet that we have today anylonger to do legal activities, you will have yourselves to blame...then it will be back to WOW and Star-Trek DVD's for you.

I'm not saying Carol's demeanor is justified or not. It is just typical Carol Kaye, IMO. If she gets pissed, she doesn't mind letting you know it. It doesn't matter if it is something as big as this, or her notion that intonation doesn't matter on electric bass. If she wants your input, she'll ask for it...

hilarious :p

After she hurled some insults at me, for playing metal, and saying that I was too stupid to learn anything (some teacher), and some other stuff like calling me a liar.

Not to really stir the pot (as I have had no interaction from her) but that doesn't exactly seem constructive.

What new ground would that be? Making a news site responsible for the events they report? Making Google responsible for the actions of any site it indexes?

I completely sympathize with her desire to curtail illegal distribution of her works. However, she's completely fallen off the reality train here. These email rants of her's aren't helping anyone.

I've never ever seen a link posted on Torrentfreak and I've read it pretty religiously.

http://www.torrentfreak.com/

I mean take a look at this site, its all news, mostly about court rulings. No links to content ever. And I think with all the types of files out there, the billions of torrents, what are the chances that the only link they would have ever posted, according to Carol, is her content.

THand. I have no need to defend whether or not I have a girlfriend, or whether or not I am bucktoothed and pocket protector wearing, but it would be a ****ing magical time if someone managed to pass world wide internet licensing. The whole concept is laughable. I mean there are sooooo many holes in the concept its not even funny, nor have I ever heard a single piece of evidence that any state has ever considered it. Not only would it be impossible to regulate, there is a push and the United Nations to make internet access a human right, have fun trying to license that.

How about you stop insulting people and making vast predictions and actually add something to the conversation

You are correct. That's something I hate about her. She will trash the very people who come to her for help, if they don't agree with her. She is dedicated to teaching what she knows as being correct. She knows what she teaches works. Unfortunately, she doesn't seem to care to hear different points of view. My impression is if you want to learn from her, she will do everything she can to teach you her way, if you want to deviate from that, she is fine showing you the door.
