It looks like poor Carol Kaye doesn't understand the internet

I lost what little respect I had for her long before this episode. I recall reading in a Bass Player interview from 10+ years ago that the proliferation of actual bands (the startup kind where members write and perform their own music) in the 60's "ruined" the music biz for her so apparently she has a long history of resisting and remaining ignorant of any kind of change. What a trailblazer. Battling up the ladder of a male dominated studio culture just to become the same cantankerous snivelly voice as the peers and predecessors she had to contend with. Her "catalog" of recorded works are of little to no relevance to me so witnessing all the bashing on this pompous, out of touch broad in this thread brings me much satisfaction.
So your defending Carol Kaye for doing the thing that your criticizing people here of doing?
The difference is that CK has a stake in this issue. Most of the rest of us don't.
She has a right to be angry about money being taken out of her pocket. Why would people here be upset about her being upset about that? It's not our money.
But there is no money at stake in the places she's going after. We could care less if she was going after sites that actually hosted her material.But THAT is why this is so ridiculous, she's having a temper tantrum about loosing money on a news site that hasn't touched her stuff. And then swearing up a storm at whoever tries to help her, including her fans.
It's like the guy who went to Wendy's after the Super Bowl and cussed out the staff because they wouldn't give him his free Grand Slam Breakfast.

Did this really happen? I really hope it did because this is probably the funniest thing I've read in days.
I wonder if CK thinks that all people who illegally download (not "steal", there's actually a honest, legal difference) things on the Internet wear eye-patches, and therefore she should republish in 3-D so her books would be unreadable. "That'll show those young, under-50 Whipper-Snappers!!!" I also shudder at the concept of attempting to inform her that the "Free Publicity" she receives online (her website & forum, other bass-related sites and forums, etc) that generates legal sales via her site and Online Stores more than likely outweighs the (IMO fairly occasional) downloading of her material via Torrents. 
well, for one, when you "steal" something from someone the original owner no longer has access to the item.
when you illegally download something, you have made a copy of the original item. the original owner/creator still has full usage of the item and has not been deprived of the usage or further distribution of said item.
the way I see it is this: if every average american home contained a machine that could download specifications over the internet and build fully functioning coffee tables out of thin air, then being in the coffee table sales business would be a bad idea. sure, you could argue that people were "stealing" your coffee tables, but you would most likely get laughed out of court.
Do you mean legal downloading? iTunes, Zune, (current) Napster are all legal and where some still get their music. Myself included.
Not that I'm holier than thou, I just don't want to risk all the spyware and viruses that alot of these sharing sites have.
Good old school theft generally covered by criminal theft laws. Things like software piracy is a matter of copyright laws. These are both serious things, with very serious penalties, but they are covered by entirely different sets of laws.

yes, money would be a good example. if I STOLE the money in your wallet then you would no longer be able to spend it. what's not to get here?

I thought I just explained what the difference was, no? I am not in any way condoning illegal downloads, only pointing out the very obvious difference in nature of physically stealing in comparison to making a copy of something.

Okay, let's try it this way. I'm selling one original song. $1 a pop. You want the song. Every time you buy it, I earn a dollar for my work/creativity/etc. Every time you STEAL it, you deprive me of money that SHOULD be in my wallet for the transaction. Seems pretty simple to me.
Don't get me wrong. I openly admit I *have* illegally downloaded some stuff. I'm not holier than thou... I can easily recognize what I have done is nothing short of theft, however.
