I have always kept my tools in their cases.

I have a '68? (I think) Gibson ES125 that I bought new. Always case kept. When I compare it to the other ones like it out there, with their faded paint and tarnished hardware, I'm grateful for the decision to keep it protected.

All of my basses go from case to gig or woodshed and back to case.

It also keeps them cleaner.

Oh, almost forgot. A pipe split caused a stream of water to fall right on top of my guitars... That was another time I was REAL glad that they were in a case!

I used to keep them in cases, but then I accumulated more basses than cases, and found I didn't play them as much when they were out of sight. So I keep most of them on stands for easy access.

Does anyone know if a stand js bad for the neck of the bass?

It's common knowledge that if you hang your bass for long enough the neck will stretch.

That's how uprights are made.

In its case, on the stand (a good stand that is), on my lap or strapped arround me.

I have only one bass and as long as it´s on a good stand I don´t mind. Wish I could hold it on my lap or strapped arround me as long as possible but....

Mine are all in cases. Some are sitting in gig bags and others in hard cases.

I keep one out on a stand. As others have said, the easy access increases the likelihood that I play regularly. However, I usually rotate which one is out. Two of the other three are in cases (one hard, one HQ gig bag) on end in a closet. I prefer to lay them flat, but the significant other is not down with basses under the bed and we don't have other horizontal space where this would be possible. The last one lives in a cheap-ish gig bag leaning against a wall in my office, since I have the occasional opportunity for a lunchtime jam at a local rehearsal studio with reasonable walk-in rates.

I do know that if I don't keep the fretless accessible fairly regularly, despite having played fretless almost exclusively for a couple of years in my much younger days, my intonation suffers. Sometimes I'll leave that one out for a longer stretch in a (fruitless???) effort to reclaim my prior comfort on that instrument.

I keep all of mine out and on stands in my music room and play at least 2 of them every day, even if only for 5 or 10 minutes each.

My basses all get babied, so they spend every single night in nice gig bags, standing upright in the closet where there is quick, easy access. I bring 'em out one at time to play and hang them on a one of those Hercules stands when not playing, but then they go back, religiously. They all still look pretty much like they did the day I got them. When I'm home, there's usually always one out as practicing/learning has replaced TV for me as my primary home downtime activity.

Sadly, all of mine are in their cases haven't had lots of time with them, and in my free time I can't pick em up because I won't put them down and it bites into my work time.... Sucks

Mine are all on wall hangers or floor stands.
When they are in a case you forget about them. I have a room with 18 guitar and bass cases/gig bags. When I moved last year I found a bass in a case that I thought I sold two years prior.

I won't be able to afford a new bass until Junior (6 months old) gets a job. :-(
For this reason, my J bass stays in its hard case where it's safe and warm. I'm more flexible with the cheapo Hofner.
