Jazz neck on a P body?

No. The jazz necks were blocked and bound and in the later years had truss rods at the headstock. The A-necked Ps continued to be dots and had truss adjust at the heel.

Also, the neck stamps still read P bass even on an A neck (well, at least mine does...).

Initially at least they all came off the same production line is what I've been led to believe. Whatever stamp or decal they eventually got was incidental. When did the difference in the truss rod location happen? I've listened in on several discussions about this and never heard that brought up.

The truss rod move on the jazz was 74/75 IIRC, when they changed to the 3 bolt micro-tilt plates. The P stayed with a 4 bolt and the truss adjust is at the heel. Check out the pic I posted before, all three basses are 78s. The fretless is a B-width, the fretted an A, and the jazz is an A (obv.) with the truss adjust at the headstock.

A Jazz neck on a smaller Precision Body is my favorite configuration. I currently have three basses that came with this layout: 1986 MIJ Fender Jazz Special (with the natural-finish and not the wider black-finish neck), 1990 MIA Fender HM, and a MIM 1998 Fender Precision Special Deluxe. The MIJ JBS and the MIM PBSD have the P/J pickup setup, and the MIA HM has three single coil jazz-style pickups and a 5-position selector switch, like a Stratocaster.

All three basses are passive and the MIA and MIJ have original parts. The MIM has Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounder replacement pickups and a replacement pickguard. They are fairly light weight and comfortable basses for rocking out!

I have a Squier P-Bass Special, and in fact this is my second time owning one of these, and the P body and middle pickup with the J neck and bridge pick up is just a great all around work horse design.

As a side note I've been hearing about P's with flats here on TB and I took the plunge. I have tried flats before and never liked them, however this time I am enjoying not only the sound of them, but also the physical feel of them. So far the only "band" test has been cranking up the iTunes and jamming along with some classic Iron Maiden. Awesome!
