Just came off a Denny Zeitlin/Charlie Haden four CD binge. Charlie Haden played on the pianist's early LPs for Columbia (alongside drummer Jerry Granelli) between 1964 and 1967 before going back to Ornette. In 1983 ECM released a live recording of Denny and Charlie in duet (maybe Charlie’s favorite format in his later years) at Keystone Korner.
Denny is one of those outliers who has created a lot of great music but hasn’t been a big influence on others the way Paul Bley and Keith Jarrett are. He has a similar style of playing ranging from straight ahead to free improv.
Playback on my mid-fi system…Sony CD carousel, Onkyo receiver, Tetra 120U speakers.
