Thanks for that link Jeff.. Could we get you to do another version of the II-V-I chord progression, but could you do some examples of Charlie Banacos triad pairs type exercises over it for contrast. If you do requests. :D

Ah well. It might be good if I didn't just hand over too many of the things that the guys learn here at The Players School. But, I would always discuss and guide you to teachers who teach this way. Remember that teachers, events, books, whatever it is that falls under the head "YOU WILL GET BETTER ON BASS IF YOU STUDY WITH US" had better make sure that music, 100% of the time is the core of those lessons. Banacos I suspect, is going to become a legend now that he is dead (funny how this seems to be the case a lot of the time). But, to embrace the greatness of his, and other guys' contributions, you have to be focused on music. Not technique, not slap, tap, rock, blues, or rock performance classes, but music. Music will give you everything you ever wanted from your bass. But you need to look for it a little bit, even if you are new to playing or have no higher ambitions than to just pick a bass to relax.

Hey Jeff, Any books or methods you can reccomend to me for learning Hemiola's? I'm talking the interesting, longer ones. I can do the 2 over 3 and 3 over 4 stuff. Those ones can be memorized quite easy with dumb sayings. "Hot cup of tea" is what i used for 2 over 3. But I cant be siting a paragraph from the constitution every time i want to bust out a long one.

Sounds like a drum issue. Or else immerse yourself in Latin music. P.S. Assuming that you are a bass player, why do you want to learn this?

He never was..?

He was, for 6 months.

A company-sanctioned Babbitt solo record never got off the ground; neither did an album project with a group called Scorpion, of which Bob was a member. To supplement his income, Babbitt became a professional wrestler for six months-but he wisely chose to retire before Killer Kowalski had a chance to bite off his ear.

You are correct Jeff about learning to read and what that can offer you, musically speaking. After playing bass for over 40 years and struggling with reading (I continue to suck at it) I still discover new and fresh ways to approach my playing after slogging through a bass chart. Even if you are not a strong reader, doing so will force you to think differently and recognize new ways to play.

Absolutely! And if you suck at it (I disregard this statement. You might be less experienced at it than you think, however) I could put you straight with reading in three month. So can many teachers who are into music. The thing about reading is this; few people know how to acquire this skill. I will go even further; most have no idea about how to acquire this skill. Why? Because nobody taught you correctly (which is why I don't like guys to teach themselves music). Plus many teachers haven't a clue about how to teach reading.

If you could find somebody who knows the true facts about teaching reading, you would be improved in the first week.

Breaks my heart to think of him leaving us as he did. Truly terrible...
I think it's a good to thing to reflect on. We can all work on playing chord tones over jazz changes until the cows come home, but if you really want to speak to people who enjoy music on your instrument, just listen to "Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I'm Your's" and you'll find out more about what makes music join us together than a lot of high-falutin' stuff that you find all over the web.

That's the song that made me realise I could play a little. Good, good memories...

No one has mentioned Bernadette, so obviously someone is looking for a fight!
But seriously I remember hearing that and Gladys Knight's Heard it Through the Grapevine when my parents had a Chevy Bel Air (of course this was the short period of time they were uncool cars) and hearing the bassline to those tunes.

The tune Bernadette attracted me to bass. I started revisiting those last week to work on my rythmic stuff, hadn't played them in years, working on For once in my Life now. Alan Slutsky is to be commended for all his work (and he's a guitar player!) in really getting JJ's name out there.
