I'm curious about the transformer coupling between the preamp and power module. Is this just for impedance matching purposes, or are you going for the touch of colouration a transformer might impart?

I use it to provide balancing; it also improves noise rejection and adds some very subtle coloration that is pleasing.

Yup, plus the Jensen JT-DB-E for the DI. Having one, let alone two premium components like this drives costs up, but it makes a worthwhile difference so that's how I roll.

Got some time with your Box O' Tone today, Jonathan. If this pre has the same punch, unconstricted sound, and lively feel that the Box does, you've got a winner on your hands. Youtube vids are nice, but don't communicate the experience of playing one.

A little crossover talk, but if it's based on the BoT, it's going to be amazing.

I have found it to be an invaluable tool. Jonathan was kind enough to add a thru jack for me for those times when I don't take my 6SL7 and want to push quality tone and signal to FoH. Sound engineers jump up and down like the ice cream truck is coming when they hear it.

Jonathan, can't wait to hear the prototype !

True story. I was there and I concur with Mike. Both boxes are open, detailed, and harmonically rich. Each sounded like itself, whatever cab it was played through, but different cabs highlighted different aspects of each. With some pairings, I'd take the Sonic Farm, but only by a bit. With the 112... it (the Box of Tone) just matched up really well.

Integrating the this tube pre and 1200 watt ICE with a 4-band inductive EQ is what completes the package and knocks it out of the park for me.

What are you doing on top of the stock ICEPower for limiting, high-pass or whatever? Anything?

The module has a soft clip feature which I was really impressed with. It gets hooked to an LED indicator. You can bypass it and probably drive it harder which I'm sure some of the smaller modules likely are, but no need since we have ample power to begin with. I transformer couple the front end with a Jensen which sounds nicer and makes it dead quiet. The voicing/low pass, etc is handled in the preamp voicing.

Heading out now to weed whack them I'm gonna chug some coffee and get to work on it.

Got the front panel layout done. I was able to keep the full-size mil-spec pots and found an LED clip indicator that matches my power indicator lamp! Decked it out with SS hardware.
