Jimmy's fault... (Ampeg content)

I am considering buying a valve head.
Used SVT-CL or VR or V4B?
I own a 210AV a 212AV and a 410HLF.
I'm worrying about the SVT weight and incredible loudness and on the other hand I'm worrying about the V4 lack of power.
What would you do ?

I played some gigs in TX with a tribute gig last month, 2 nights I had lovely SVT backlines, the last night it was a very new looking V4B/810 combo. It absolutely rocked, no lack of power/headroom, and I was playing pretty damn loud. I was impressed, as I did have some doubt when I saw it wasn't an SVT. Of course, YMMV.

With all the hub-bub about the 20T and 50T, I forgot this was on its way to me. This was waiting for me when I got home yesterday:

Indeed it is! It will keep me occupied while I try to decide on a 20T or 50T!

I think that the 50 is a much better value. Of course, that extra value cost more.

I have two guitar amps that use the 6V6 power tube, a Fender Vibro-Champ and a tweed Deluxe (5E3). Both are amazing sounding amps and they can get pretty loud. But if you want good headroom at a higher volume level, I'd go with the PF-50 which employs the 6L6GC.

OPPS: fixed a boo-boo related to cutting power.

If you want less volume out of the PF-50, pull a push-pull pair of output tubes, plug a 4 ohm cab in, and set the impedance switch to 8 ohms.
All good stuff to consider David. I guess I'm leaning toward the 50 right now, especially after seeing JimmyM's pic. I really don't play out regularly anymore (except for the occasional charity fund raiser type gig) as I'm focusing on writing and recording, so the 20 would do it for the studio but on the other hand I could use the 50 on gigs if need be.
Funny, 50 watts doesn't sound like a lot, but I remember a buddy of mine had a B25B with the 215 cab back in the day, and that was enough to fill a school auditorium with no FOH support.
I guess the other option would be to get the 20, and if I wanted to use it on a gig, run the DI out back into the effects return of another amp using a Whirlwind Little Imp or something similar.

Sorry John, for some reason I had it in my mind that there were four output tubes in the 50, there are only two. Been working since 4Am today and didn't have my head screwed all the way on. Fixed my post above.

Tough choice between the 50 and the 20. Like you said, if you were gigging all the time the 50 is the obvious choice. For writing and recording the 20 is way more than is needed, and like you said, you could patch it out into another amp to give you what you need. I often mic smaller amps so there are a few options. Besides, a 20W amp isn't that far from the 25W B-15 which has a lot of volume.

I have a studio rack box that's a speaker motor dummy load with a line out. I use it often, sometime for recording, other times to feed the line signal into the input of another amp to get a distorted sound. Having this feature on the new Ampeg amps is a really good way to go. I would have added a pot on the line out to adjust the level. Mesa has this on some of their amps. It would have driven the cost up a little more (less profit) and an external pad could be used if necessary so it isn't a big deal.

A large part of that big sound is the fairly large B25B 2x15 cab. It can make a small amp sound formidable. These days most people who want a small amp, want a small cab as well

All this Ampeg talk has me GASsing for an SVT rig, even though I'll seldom use it. I try to play on IEMs all the time and I have a very nice EBS Fafner rig with the EBS NeoLine 410 cabinet when I need an amp.

But a keyboard player buddy of mine runs a small backline company and he has a very nice-sounding Ampeg SVT rig. He doesn't rent it often and he's offered to let me hold on to it and use it. And even buy it, even though he's not actively trying to sell it.

There's nothing on earth that sounds like that amp. And the power of that thing is very intoxicating!

I don't know particulars of the amp, except that it has the light-colored front grill-cloth on it, not the black grill cloth. I may get all that and report back with it.

I need to take a breath and resist the temptation to spend more money. Especially when there's a very nice MM SR5 about to hit the door in 2 hours!
