Nah, he origianly used a regular Herco nylon pick, and latter a Dunlop Tortex, both standard size and shape (like the classic Fender pick). He held it between the tips of his fingers, if I remember correctly, as oposed to bear-pawing it like most do (holding the pick between the pad of the thumb and side of the curled around index finger).

He's a joy to watch play, so precise; not a bothched note to be heard.

Let's also mention that John mastered the 4 finger plucking technique. It's amazing to watch him move his index, middle, ring and pinky fingers across the strings with such fluidity and precision... and FAST!!!

I am currently learning Won’t Get Fooled Again using The Kids Are Alright DVD. The second DVD has the “Ox Cam” on Won’t Get Fooled Again and Baba O’Rielly. Even with the video and audio I find myself wondering “How did he do that?”

Won’t Get Fooled Again from The Kids Are Alright is a live version where he uses his fingers instead of a pick but I had always thought he had used a pick based on the tone he got.

Live at Leeds has lots of pick - same period as Isle Of Wight and Woodstock.
P-bass with Rotosounds through a pile of HIWATTs.
His best tone IMO.

Its kind of related tapping, but I never really got into that aspect on his playing so that's really all I know.

Uh yeah...I couldn't have said it better myself, even twice, as you did.

And...I've had the pleasure of going temporarily deaf while standing 3 feet from him on a few occasions while he solo'd through entire shows with the John Entwistle Band.

Good thing he's gone, or my ears would start bleedin' from seeing too many of their shows.

Interesting you bring this up. I belong to Vongo online videos and this video was one of the musical choices..I obviously downloaded it and am going to watch it in a couple days....matter of fact I have had it in my movie library for quite some time but have been too busy to check it out!!!

ok guys, i saw it last nite. very cool. the interviews with the ox and his mom are especially great. a lot of the live footage though is stuff we've seen on the kids are alright dvd. where this dvd shines is with the bonus footage. they have some absolutely mindblowing live footage of the john entwistle band doing "the real me', 'shaking all over', and 'young man blues.' all these songs are essentially bass solos. 'Fricken UNBELIEVABLE stuff!! and then there are a few songs from a detroit show too. i'd say it's a must for fans of the Ox. you feel like you know him a little better after watching this.
