Actually, some may feel he's a good singer. But, did you know how talented he really is? He was formally trained, unlike any of the other members of The Who! He could play the keyboards, horns, and was the sound "engineer" (He had something to do with sound, can't think of the word)!

I have a Hot Licks instructional video called Bass Guitar Master Class with John Entwistle (or something like that). It's an hour of him playing solo and with a guitarist, and it has to be seen to be believed. I'm not sure it has a whole lot of value as a learning tool, because even when he explains what he's doing, it's still beyond the reach of most mortals, but watching him play up close for an hour is very cool.

man! after viewing that clip i got so excited about John...i heard you guys talking about him but i did research (because here in my country a Who fan is so rare...i didn´t get to know Entwistle till i watch the clip)

now i´m hooked on the who and the entwistle band...man you should see me trying to do that entwistle fingering...man i have a long road ahead...

btw...if you have a fast connection (or plenty of time) download the second clip about the VH1 where are they now...with mostly entwistle info. it´s about 24 mb

Ive been trying to show some of my mates on the internet how good a bass player John Entwistle is.
Does anyone know where i might find a online video of him playing a solo?
Id perticularly like to see any video of the recent Who tour.

Ive searched around for stuff on the net but ive come up empty handed. even Entwistles own site is crap for vids.

True, Entwistle's website isn't the best for showing off his talent. There are a couple of MPEGs that you could view on his website that kind of gloss over it, but that's it.

Direct TV is supposedly playing the Royal Albert Hall shows during the month of August, and there will be a DVD that's supposed to be released of The Who's same show.

If you don't mind going older, the "Who Rocks America" from 1982 isn't bad, considering the time and the growth he's made as a player since then. I think at that time, he was only the greatest. He's much greater now!

Another Who concert on video that shows a little bit is the 1989 Tommy concert. His bass solo in "Sparks" is pretty intense to watch, though the camera angles kind of destroy it.

I wish there were more as well. Keep an eye out for him in concert. That's the best way to show your friends how completely fluid of a player he is!:D

Hey everyone,

I posted the John Entwistle solo from THE WHO's latest DVD "Live at Royal Albert Hall". The quality’s not excellent, but if this doesn't make your jaw drop, then I don't know what will. For those of you who heard it, I'm sure you know what I'm talking about. He is truly a bass god, the best rock bass player.

On a side note, the DVD itself is breath taking. I never saw this great of a concert footage before. If you like the Who, or just interested in them or rock music I totally recommend it. If not then, check it out for the sake of The Ox. He is truly mind-blowing! He takes every song to a whole new level never reached before. For example, “My Wife”, the solo during “5:15”, “The Real Me”, “Won’t Get Fooled Again” are a must see for all bass players.

Angus is right about actually seeing.... It's totally something else watching him go at it. He truly is "Mr. Thunderfingers".

About the tone, well Entwistle was always a tone freak. He also uses a DigiTech 2120 Artist guitar effects and chorusing, so that adds to the distortion. Everyone has their opinions about his sound. I personally don't mind it, but I agree that sometimes he takes it too far. I liked his 70's tone much better (P-Bass). But in the end, he is still, in my opinion, one of the greatest base players in history.

As much of an Entwistle fan I am, I also think that he's had some pretty shocking tones in the past, and the one he has now is probably one of the worst. I saw the Who last year, and you can't even hear the bass cut through live - the only time I could actually hear him was when he did his solo in 5.15. (Thanks for the link by the way, Hitman) Still, each to his own.

I've seen him several times, and when he's come to Chicago with The John Entwistle Band, I've usually managed to stand just a few feet from him. Made my jaw drop and my ears bleed, even WITH my ear plugs.

I think his tone, with the all-graphite Buzzard is way to harsh...it was much warmer with the Warwick Buzzard.

But still, he's one of my favorites!:D
