As for Live at Leeds, it really shows what a true rock band can accomplish on stage. To perform Tommy without interruption is amazing. Entwistle has his moment during "Amazing Journey/Sparks". I just love his tone during that gig. He was great during "Heaven and Hell" and "Young Man Blues" also. "H and H" is a very underrated song. It's one of their best performances on stage and really sets the tone for the rest of the show as an oppener. I don't know about you, but I think they should've kept opening shows with that song. Later, they opened with "I Can't explain" which is not really a hard rocking song.

I know the solo on Live at Leeds you're talking about. It's really cool!

Have you heard the version of H&H on Entwistle's solo King Biscuit Flower Hour? If you haven't, the tone he gets is absolutely killer!:D The whole show is really cool! Also check out My Wife on the same disc. You can hear how he uses chorus really clearly. Expertly mastered for bass players;)

I'm an admin over at the Home Theater Forum so I'm really big on concert video in my A/V system.

Personally I think that Who disc is about the worst concert video I've ever experienced. The video is very very good. However, the 5.1 audio mix is absolutely horrible, the worst I've ever heard. The stereo mix is fair at best. Technically it is a huge dissapointment.

However, the performance is very good.

Entwisle is one of my all time favorite bass players. His tone on this DVD is, as usual, bloody awful IMO. If his goal is to get a tone which sounds like a big noise and no-one can hear anything he's doing (he may as well be hitting random strings), he's succeeded a great deal. I think that 1979 and the album Who Are You is the last time John had a decent bass tone. Since then, it's just gotten worse and worse. It could be because his hearing is probably greatly damaged.

Just My opinion of course. :)

No, I haven't heard the KBFH record, but I've seen the CD at the music store. I'm pretty sure it rocks! Entwsitle live is totally transformed. I'll plan to get it!

It's true that the video picture is great. But, I can't comment on the audio since I haven't tried in Dolby or DTS. The stereo sound seemed ok with me, but I'm not an expert or anything. So, I'll give you the benefit of doubt.

You're also right about Entwistle's sound on the DVD. Too much distortion, and at times it becomes difficult to follow him , despite being very loud! But, overall I loved the whole concert

Maybe seeing and hearing him play live is another story, 'cause he still is my favorite bassist ;-)

Okay, this is probably where my computer skills lack...I can't open the link. My computer tells me I need to open it with a certain program, and gives me choices. Which program do I choose? What if I don't have that particular program?:(

First, the file is zipped. Therefore, you must have WINZIP to uzip it. You can get it from www.download.com

Then, the file is a MP3, so the most logical choice is Windows Media Player (Latest version if possible, if not then just try it anyway...).

P.S. Try saving on your PC first (right click, "save target as...")

I had the original Live at Leeds, then shelled out for the newer box version with extra tracks and between-song chitchat... now they release a 2CD. I guess the rent on those castles is pretty expensive, jeez. Still, I'm a-gonna go git it. Ox rules.

I echo this sentiment...why does he have such a crappy tone now though? (Maybe years of playing with the Who have damaged his hearing? :confused: )

I just love his tone on "Who's Next"

For those of you who don't know, The Who recently released a remastered version of "Kids are Alright", the soundtrack to their excellent film. It's a fabulous showcase of Entwistle's live tones throughout the Keith Moon years.

My favorite track on that album is "My Wife". As on "Live at Leeds", bass is panned left and guitar to the right, so you can pan your stereo towards the left and become awed by the majesty of Ox' groove and technique. The fact that he's singing and playing at the same time makes this performance all the more awesome.

Live at Leeds and Kids are Allright are great proofs that the Who are one of the greatest live acts in music history, and that the Ox is one of the greatest bassist out there. In my opinion, his performance on the last track of TKAA, "Won't get fooled again" is memorable. And I just love his tone. It's very powerful, high on treble and midrange, but not distorted like today.

I don't know about you guys, but I just can't sing when I'm playing :) Whenever I do, I screw up my riffs and forget the notes I'm supposed to play. Kudos to everyone out there who can!

I think everything has been said about Entwistle's current tone, so I won't advance on that subject any further.

relman - I don't really know either. Having seen/heard him since the late 60's, he has undoubtedly influenced my tone more than any other bassist.

Perhaps it is the Ashdowns + the inadequate recording skills (at great risking of pissing all the Ashdown owners on TB). But, I've tried them and walked away shaking my head. They totally lacked what is essential to the Entwistle sound and one of the elements he made popular - metallic top end! He may be compromising his signature tone for Ashdown loot. I hope not.

Plus, I have an instructional video where his "lesson" (if you can call it that) is totally unuseable to me. The action on his Buzzard is so unreal to accommodate his "typewriter" technique and he has so much chorus dialed in, his tone actually was a turnoff, (which is almost heresy for me).

I'd love to say I've actually played one of HIS Buzzards, but I can't. What I have heard, however, backs up what you're saying about his action. It was described to be as being so low that it's virtually unplayable by most bass players.

His tone, IMO, went south when he switched to Status. The graphite bass seems to be so harsh in the treble that it almost hurts my ears when I listen to some recent recordings. I don't think he can hear those harsh frequencies well because his hearing is so bad (he wears hearing aids); thus, I'm sure it doesn't matter to him as much.

He's said that he can't hear much difference between wood and graphite. Maybe he's trying to downplay it since he likes the stability of the graphite neck.

He's still my single biggest influence, however, and I still love to listen to him play!:D

Thanks! Well, the whole "Who's Next" album really changed my life. It kinda opened my spirit. I had never felt like that ever before. "Baba O'Riley" and "Won't get fooled again" are the songs that influenced my way of living the most. I just don't know how to describe the feeling in words. It was like I was blind all my life and suddenly I could see. This may seem weird or stupid to some, but it's the truth. That is why I became interested in music and oddly enough, John Entwistle's "My Wife" is the song that made me want to play the bass :D

RAM, about "My Wife", you should've play that song at your wedding! ;)

She told me not to plan on playing at the wedding. Then, I approached the bass player and asked him if I could fill in for a Blues jam. He was about to take off his bass and hand it to me when I thought about the wife's comments.

I didn't learn until the honeymoon that she would have enjoyed me playing...she actually meant that she wasn't going to subject me to MANDATORY playing at the wedding...I guess her sister's husband was asked to play a song at their wedding on keyboards...he got up there and played a few scales...completely forgot how to play!

I could have gotten away with it! Then, I could have had the band jam in B while I did my best Entwistle imitation on 'My Wife';) If only I'd have thought about it sooner...:(
