Sadly I never got to see the Who or John live.
My favorite period was the Live at Leeds/Isle Of Wight era. The band jelled at it's best in my opinion in so many ways, musically, sonically and creative. I love the way they played the songs different than on the records, instead of like a lot of bands who try to recreate the recording so it's like watching the band act out the EXACT recording.
I think that period was both John, Keith & Pete's best sounds. Pete sounded the best to me with his SG and P90 pickups. That guitar screamed like a strat, but with the warmth of a Gibson. The LP period just was not the same for me.
Likewise with John. My favorite bass sounds he had were the P, T bird & Fenderbird basses. In my opinion, when we went active with Alembic/ Buzzard, etc his bass sounded artificial & sterile. It lost all its natural sound and warmth. By the end his Buzzard sounded so terrible to me, it's so artificial sounding. He was still a bass playing terror till the end. Just amazing.
