To make it even sadder, Hal Willner passed away the other day from COVID 19 as well. His last tweet was a call out for well wishes for John Prine. It was sent out shortly after word got out the John was battling with the virus. This is all so heartbreaking. A day doesn't go by that I don't hear or read about losing someone I held in high regard.

Stuck me hard as well last night. I loved so many of his early songs. So hard loosing those artists that we learned and shared there songs together with family and friends from so long ago. I can remember first singing John Prine songs in the early 70's to my aunts and uncles who are no longer here either ---- Dear Abby, Blow up your TV, Hello in There. Now loosing John we've seemed to have lost another bridge to those memories of family long gone. This all hurts so much...

Yes, I know this is a little off topic, but I know that there are some of us older guys here who are big John Prine fans so cut us a little slack please.

I heard of his passing today, a victim of Covid-19 after surviving 2 bouts with cancer. I had the pleasure to work with many times him (mixing FOH primarily) over the years, from the mid 1980's until about 6 or 7 years ago. His songs have been covered by a who's who of artists, yet he remained a songwriter's musician in spite of their popularity. His engaging personality and wry sense of humor was always a welcome change from the stiffness of some of the acts I worked with.

For those unfamiliar with his work, here are a couple of tunes that you might enjoy. They are also songs that many of you (including myself) have played.]

Thanks for posting those. He was an amazing man and songwriter, and he touched many people of all ages with his wit, humor, tireless work, and talent.

I'm sorry for your loss. I can only imagine that having worked with him over the years, you've lost an old friend. My condolences.

I already posted this in one of the rip threads, but @agedhorse , as you knew him, I thought you'd appreciate this show he did on Irish radio a couple of years back.
One of my big regrets is never going to see him play any of the many times he played Ireland.

I learned how to play John's tunes on guitar over 40 years ago, as did many other guit players. He's a legend, that's for sure, and he'll be missed.
I hope his flag decal works for him, he deserves it.

When my brother started trying to get me to play something besides country music, he pulled me in with John Prine and JJ Cale. To this day they are still my favorite songwriters. Every time we all get together to play, my baby sister always sings this one for us. She has a beautiful voice and it always moves me when I hear her sing. I hope I can get through it next time we get together.

I have to be honest - knew who John Prine was. Never listened to him - I tend to have an unhealthy aversion to the acoustic folk type thing that I associated his name with. After his passing I grabbed a 'John Prine essentials' playlist.

now I feel the loss - and a sadness I didn't appreciate the genius and humanity while he was with us. His lyrics strike so hard - I'm blown away.

Another virus related bummer

My first serious girlfriend and I got to see John P open up for Arlo G way back in the mid 80s at a pretty small theatre back in our hometown. That was a special event in more ways than one

Following his death, I've been listening hard to his last release Tree Of Forgiveness.
It's so damn good, like Johnny Cash's or Leonard Cohen's last records, just a powerful testament.

And I watched the video for 'Summer's End' maybe 10 times last night, playing along to it and, I don't mind admitting, shedding a few tears.

In 1996 I saw a local musician who played a song called "Grandpa was a Carpenter" and it introduced me to the music of John Prine.
I then played the album "Prime Prine" in its entirety and then cried my ass off.

You beat cancer TWICE.

Listening to the songs of John Prine in recordings is making me an emotional wreck.
