Have you guys not read any of my replies to this thread that I created, The "John Reshard is the Next Jaco" IS A TYPO!!! What I meant to put was "Is John Reshard the Next Bass Innovator, like Jaco was", Ive stated that I made this typo before, but it seems none of happened to see that because your all still caught up on the "next Jaco" part. Please, Its not what I meant at all, there will never be another Jaco, I know this, I am just thinking that if your as good as John Reshard at 17, who knows what he will accomplish in the rest of his life. So please people, read the entire thread before you post. I would change the name of this thread but I cant. Peace

Jon Reshard, the Next Jaco??

Like Peter Parker said, technique doesn't mean jack if you're not playing something musical and meaningful with it. Vic Wooten and Eddie Van Halen both have staggering technique, but ultimately, the reason they're hall of famers is because they made great music. And you don't have to have great technique to make great music. Remember Adrian Davison, "the world's fastest bass player"? Sure, he could play 31 notes a second, but it was crap. No hall of fame for him.
I think it'll be interesting to see what happens with Jon Reshard through the years. You could kind of parallel him with LeBron James at this point: they're both around the same age, and both virtuosos, but when it's all said and done, will anyone remember them?

Thats good stuff man, Only thing I could suggest is add the harmonics he uses in the original song, Other than that It sounds great, keep it up.
It was good Fhodshon, but your timing was off in a few places and you lost the beat(that was a weird beat too btw)
but other than that, it sounded good.
And eric, The first harmonics Jaco introduces to that song would be right at hte point where Fred faded out, so if they WERE in there, we wouldn't have been able to hear them cause the song hadn't reached that point.

I just listened and if you listen closely, he couldn't do a thing fingerstyle, but then he switched back to thumb style and proceded to tear s**t up but I heard no inventiveness at all! Granted, this was 'alegedly' 3 years ago! I hope he has improved his creativeness and worked on his fingerstyle speed!

My god, that is the greatest version of Donna Lee Ive ever heard. You my friend are a true bass virtuoso...
Here's my guess for who (already) IS the Jaco of the 21st century and able to perform on ANY STYLE. (like any very very good musician)

Checking out that Sean malone guy...he is good, I really dig this stuff.
He certainly has Jacos tone, and playing style....however, he looked so emotionless in that video, like, I don't know, I like seeing cats really diggin in and feelin it, maybe he was, and he just shows it in a different way.

I love music and I love talking about music. I also love to hear new people doing their thang. I don't "worry" about what other people are doing but I certainly don't close my ears to what others have to offer. My musical education has not atopped. I am always open to what others have to offer.

I think JT was becoming bothered by the increasing level of envy-mosity and chest-beating sparked by, what, a kid who can't even play his chops in a bar for another 4 years? Yeah, that was bothering me too. For some people, music is a competition - along with JT, I find that attitude disgusting.
I have read nowhere in this thread where anyone suggests music is a competition. Nor did I see any chest-beating.
I agree, music is not a competition, but it seems to me to be more about freak shows and acrobatics. Everyone is so hung up about how something is getting played and by what bass that they've stopped listening to the music. That's what disgusts me.
Further rant:
I'm not sure what age has to do with talent. Didn't Mozart start composing by 14? Prodigy's have no age restrictions. There are plenty of youngsters that can smoke my butt.
I'm new to this forum, but since I've been here I see alot of folks resistant to listening to something new or at least taking an open ear approach to hearing what someone has to offer. People seem real eager to rip someomes cred.
I don't think the original post was boasting or chest beating. I think he was excited by something he had heard and wanted to share his find with all of you. Peep's made him out to be a fool because he thinks this kids got talent or compared him to Jaco. They couldn't wait to prove him wrong. Where's the love?
I wonder If Jaco was the next Jaco when he was 12?
From what I've read this kid has a great head start and already has folks talking about his game. Hopefully with nurturing he'll really bloom!

You know, over 50% of accomplished musicians always speak as if they are comparing other people's playing to the 'perfect player'. The other people usually are the ones I like better. They are easier to talk to, and I find their playing speaks more to me.
2 examples, Manring and Oteil. Humble monsters. The rest that have attitudes, bye!
